LATE MAI HARTLEY

The death occurred after a long illness of Mai Hartley (née Kennedy) from Brabstown on Thursday, February 7, in her 90th year.

Mai, was truly one of the old Irish stock, a pleasant and friendly lady, who endeared all whom she came into contact with. For many years she resided in Manchester, with her late husband, Jack Hartley, and her three sons, Séamus, John, and Brendan.

On retirement the family came to live in Brabstown where they were very much a vivid part of the parish community. Mai got great enjoyment seeing the exploits of her grandsons, Pat and John Hartley, playing hurling and football with Tullogher and winning many awards home and abroad. Her love of the GAA was not surprising seeing that her late brothers, Pat and Simon Kennedy and James, still with us, also donned the Tullogher colours in bygone years winning many county championships.

Mai was waked in Doyle’s Funeral Home Rosbercon, on Saturday, February 9, and was laid to rest in Mullinarrigle Cemetery after one o’clock Mass on Sunday the 10th where a huge congregation of mourners gathered to pay their final respects to another old friend from a fast diminishing era. Sincere sympathy goes to her sons, Séamus, John and Brendan, sisters, Teresa and Eily, brothers James and Tom, daughters-in-law, Monica, Joanne and Margaret grandchildren and the extended family on the sad passing of Mai Hartley.

The latest winners in the Tullogher-Rosbercon GAA Club Development Draw were €250, Ollie Ryan, Ballyneale, €100 each, Séamus Forristal, Shanbogh, and Eamon Bookle, Mullinakill. Cheques for €50 went to Basil Glennon, Tullogher, John Kennedy, Glenpipe, Dodie Walsh, Brownstown and Tony O’Connor, Millbanks.

LATE TONY MURPHY

Much regret was felt in the parish with the passing of Tony Murphy from Tinneranny at University Hospital Waterford on Thursday, February 7.

A native of Danganbeg, Knocktopher, Tony came to this parish many years ago, firstly to Conway’s of Listerlin and then to Grennan’s of Ballycurran where he gave the best part of his lifetime. He was involved in all aspects of parish life, church collector, member of the Vintage Club, follower of the GAA, club and county and above all a diligent and honest worker.

He liked nothing better than to have a chat about how things were going in this country and he had a permanent chair in Ned Sinnott’s shop in Rosbercon in which to air his views. Seeing where his roots were (between Knocktopher and Dunamaggin) he would have got great enjoyment from the victories of the Shamrocks (Ballyhale) over Ballygunner and Dunamaggin over Castleblayney in the all-Ireland Junior Club Hurling Final at the weekend.

Pre-deceased by his wife, Una (Rowe), Tony is survived by his aunt, Peggy, cousins, Matty, Joh, Eamon and Eilish, sister-in-law, Peggy Foran, relatives and a large circle of friends. Tony was waked in Doyle’s Funeral Home Rosbercon on Sunday, February 10, and after Requiem Mass on Monday in the Church of the Assumption was interred in the adjoining cemetery. Sincere sympathy goes to the bereaved may Tony’s gentle soul rest in peace.
