OVER-35S SOCCER

It was almost back to business as usual for the bibs as a very close game was had with the scores at 7-7 well into injury time when the young fellas sneaked in for a goal as the last kick of the game gave them a hard earned victory. 15 players took to the pitch with the bibs having the extra man for the first half and surprisingly were a goal down at half time. With only seven players in the second half it looked like a possible struggle, but surprisingly took a two goal lead mid way through the second half. Overall it was a very close and tough encounter but thoroughly enjoyed by all.

If you want to get involved in playing over-35s and maybe fancy a trip to the UK next May, games usually take place on Saturday evening indoor in Grantstown at 6 p.m. So if you fancy coming along, please be there 15 minutes beforehand so we can kick off on time.

Further information can be got by giving Dave a shout either by text or a call to 086 8596627 – he’ll be delighted to hear from you.

RACKARD LEAGUE FOOTBALL

The Rackard League football competition continued last week when Clongeen National School took on Ballymitty and CarrickNational Schools in the New Ross district final. The boys were extremely nervous at the start and before they had time to settle they had conceded three goals of the unfortunate kind. Ryan Whitty had a great game in goal pulling off several outstanding saves.

William Bennett and Conor Kilkenny in defense were superb as they fought like tigers to keep their opponents at bay during that first half. Conor Burke and Dylan Bennett scored a point each due mainly to the efforts of Paddy Quigley, the Bannow goalkeeper, who was unbeatable. He coped with everything the lads threw at him to leave us trailing by 5-7 to 0-2 when half time arrived.

The second half was a different story as the lads shrugged off the over respect they had for their physically bigger opponents and started to play football to their usual high standard. From the throw in Conor Burke won possession to start the comeback which led to a point from his midfield partner Seán Eustace. Jack Quigley was on target with a fine point and Conor Burke was deadly from placed balls. Owen Finn was moved to full back and the Clongeen goalmouth became a no go area for Bannow’s forwards. A great turnover from Jamie Breen and a quick hand pass from Séamie Whelan led to Seán Eustace rattling the roof of the Bannow net.

Jack Quigley chipped in with another point before captain Seán Eustace tore through the centre of the Bannow defense to rattle the net for his second major. Both Luke Murphy and Caylum O’Gorman came very close only to be denied by the upright and the crossbar. Everyone fought tooth and nail right to the final whistle but it wasn’t enough. We scored 2-5 in the second half while conceding just three points to leave the final score Bannow 5-10 v Clongeen’s 2-7.

The goals conceded at the start were crucial. The lads were commended by the Rackard League secretary for their fight to the finish and never say die attitude. Our team was in the back row: Cathal Curtis, Conor Kilkenny, Jack Quigley (0-2), Luke

Murphy, Owen Finn, Seán Eustace – Captain (2-1), William Bennett, Martin Wall, Conor Burke (0-3), Jamie Breen, Colin Murphy. In the front row was: Kyle Delaney Sinnott, Callum O’Gorman Kearney, Larry Browne, Ryan Whitty, Callum Gardiner, Séamie Whelan and Dylan Bennett (0-1).

We wish Bannow-Ballymitty the best of luck in the county semi-final. No doubt with their huge panel which contains plenty of talent they will be very hard to beat.
