DOWN MEMORY LANE

The recent death of Tom Stephenson severed another link from the great Tullogher team who won the Kilkenny Senior Football Final of 1962. Having disposed of Clara and Glenmore in the earlier rounds they faced hot favourites, Muckalee in the County Final.

A great GAA writer of the time, Eugene Rellis, of the Waterford News and Star aptly summed up that famous victory. ‘Playing excellent football reminiscent of the club’s halcyon days in the long ago 1930s, Tullogher had a convincing 1-7 to 0-2 over their vaunted rivals when they captured the clubs eighth Kilkenny Senior Title. Taking the game to their opponents from the throw-in the result was never in doubt for the longer the game went on the more pronounced was Tullogher’s superiority’.

The line-out on that memorable day some 58 years ago was, Mick Rellis (RIP, Tinneranny,) Jimmy Cummins (Cooleen), Philly Murphy (Ballyreddy), Phil Murphy (Ballyfoyle), Paddy Cummins (RIP Cooleen), Billy Murphy Capt (Brownsford), John Hamilton (Ballyneale), Simon Kennedy RIP (Ballymagill, Andy Lee (Kilbrahan, John McCarthy (RIP) (Rosbercon), Tom Stephenson (RIP) (Rosbercon) Ollie Terry (Rosbercon), Paddy Grace (Rosbercon), Jamesie Murphy (Glensensaw, Con O’Neill (Rosbercon). Scorers were, John McCarthy, 1-4, Con O’Neill, 0-1, Paddy Grace, 0-1, and Jamesie Murphy 0-1. The referee was Seán O’hUginn NT from the Rower, who won praise from both victors and vanquished for his handling of the game.
