Darts exhibition in aid of Ard Aoibhinn

- Stories behind the scenes

THIS IS the time of year when the darts fans in our midst are still revelling in the action after the two world championships were played off in a short space of time. It’s not every day that followers get a chance to see one of the top players in action in Wexford or, indeed, to take them on over a few legs to test their own ability.

However, an event this coming weekend will provide that opportunity and, even more importantly, it’s for a very good cause.

Jelle Klaasen is on his way to Wexford, as he will play in an exhibition in Billy Kelly’s,

The Faythe, this Saturday,

February 1, from 9 p.m.

All proceeds will go to Ard

Aoibhinn, the provider of day services, residential and respite services for both adults and children with an intellectual disability in Wexford.

There is free admission, and any local darts enthusiasts who wish to play against the Dutch professional should contact Eddie on 087-3589830 without delay.

A total of 20 slots are on offer for games against Klaasen, nicknamed ‘The Cobra’, and sponsorship cards are also available from Billy Kelly’s for anyone who would like to help with the fundraising for Ard Aoibhinn.

The special guest became the youngest world champion on January 15, 2006, aged 21 years 90 days, when he beat fellow countryman Raymond van Barneveld in the BDO final by seven sets to five.

He was a 100-1 outsider for the title, as he didn’t even have a BDO tour ranking at the time.
