First silverware of season collected by Forth and Ross Town WOMEN’S ROUND-UP

-

FORTH CELTIC and New Ross Town collected the first silverware of the season when lifting the Premier One and divisional shields in two excellent games on Sunday.

Seaview United and Forth Celtic clashed for the second week in a row and produced another thriller as Forth eventually came out 4-2 winners on an excellent surface in Fethard to lift the Premier One shield for the first time.

Keisha Tobin and Lisa Dower were on target for Seaview, but two goals from Rianna Cullen and one each from Natasha Byrne-Rossiter and Sarah Siggins saw Forth come out on top.

Both sides were evenly matched with very little between them, but Forth’s firepower and their ability to take their chances proved the difference.

The most improved team in women’s soccer, New Ross Town, overcame a determined, hard-working Kiltealy Celtic in the divisional shield in Good Counsel College.

These two sides are also very evenly matched and produced a top-class competitive encounter before a goal five minutes from the end gave Town victory.

Alma Morris put Kiltealy ahead in the first-half, but a goal from Sinéad Ryan brought the sides level midway through the second period.

The game looked like extra-time might be on the cards until Jenny Canning shot to the net on the 85th minute to give her side victory.

While their two main rivals were playing in the shield final, Ferns took the opportunity to move joint top of the Premier Division when they travelled to North End United and came away 2-0 winners.

Goals from Chloe Moynihan and Aoife Devereux saw Ferns extend their unbeaten run to four games and put them right back into contention to defend their Premier title.

Two goals from Ann Marie Dunphy, one each from Chantelle Martin and Jasmine Martin, plus an unlucky own goal, saw Adamstown pick up their fifth win of the season.

Corach picked up an easier than expected three points as Camolin Celtic were unable to pull together enough numbers to travel and conceded the points.

Fastnet Rovers moved second in the table when they travelled to an understrength St. Cormac’s and came away comfortable 8-0 winners.

Tombrack made the journey to Aughrim Rangers and raced into a 3-0 lead with two goals from Megan Hayes and one from Mikayla Tobin-Cosgrave.

Two goals from Emma Kirwan saw Aughrim come back into the game, but the visitors held on for their second win of the season.

North End secured their place in the Under-12 Premier Division when overcoming Bridge Rovers 6-1.

Curracloe will also be playing in the Premier Division as they produced a fine display to overcome Adamstown 5-0.

Shelburne and Cushinstown played on Friday night, with Shelburne running out 6-2 winners.

Abbey Cowman and Lily O’Reilly scored two each, while Caoimhe Bolger and Lauren Phelan were also on target. Grace Bolger and Abbey Gaffney scored for Cushinstown.

Five goals from Aoibhinn Downey set New Ross Town on the way to a 7-0 win over Seaview United, with Ciara Nolan and Sarah O’Leary also getting their names on the scoresheet.

Laura Hore put Rosslare Rangers 1-0 up against Fastnet Rovers, but a strong second-half performance from Rovers saw them bounce back to win 4-1, with Ella Martin scoring all four.

There will be one more round of grading fixtures on February 8.

These will be followed by the first round of the cup two weeks later, and then the league will play out in divisions for the remainder of the season.

Any team with back fixtures will be expected to make an effort to get those games played over the coming weeks.

In the Under-16 Premier Division, Adamstown moved to the top of the table with a 7-4 win over Seaview United.
