NEW ROSS SENIORS

A dirty fog, a real peasouper, shrouded the course on Thursday, making it just barely possible to have our normal weekly outing.

It was a real lottery playing into the greens, with the pin obscured most of the time with visibility almost at zero.

A small clearance came when the twelve teams were near the finish of their round, but it was then a case of ‘too little, too late’.

However, all were in to see the big Thyestes Chase from Gowran Park where Willie Mullins provided the runaway winner in Total Recall at a price of 16/1.

We had no runaway winners in our competition, instead we had a blanket finish involving five teams all within a point of each other.

Taking the honours by a short head, a nose or a snout, call it what you will but Jimmy Furlong (13), Larry Shannon (21), Jamesie Wallace (22) and Jim ‘Dublin’ Ryan (25) prevailed by one point, clocking up 95 to take the warming drop of Paddy Whiskey.

All sorts of countbacks were needed to finalise second place before Mikey Lee (16), Peter Goggin (17), Willie Wallace (20) and Paddy Mahony (21) took it with 94 points, courtesy of a better back nine (50/46).

Third on the same score were Mick Gannon (18), Willie Naddy (23), Martin Burke (25) and Les Jastrebski (26) thanks to a better score (46/45) on the last nine holes.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Tom Murphy on the ninth hole and Dan Quigley on the eleventh.

Many thanks go to Dick Cuddihy for updating our draw board and players’ categories which was a highly efficient piece of work - much appreciated by all of our group.
