Curracloe crowned Ireland’s best beach
CURRACLOE has been named Ireland’s best beach by readers of the Sunday Independent.
In the paper’s annual Reader Travel Awards the South Wexford beach topped the poll in Favourite Beach category beating off competition from Inch in Kerry and Brittas Bay in Wicklow.
And those who voted for the beach were effusive in their praise.
‘We only discovered Curracloe beach last year on a weekend trip to Wexford,’ said one voter. ‘It was February, so not exactly beach weather, but it was one of the highlights of our visit.
‘I couldn’t believe how long and beautiful the beach is. It just goes on and on, perfect for a long walk and to blow away the cobwebs. The kids loved running up and down the dunes, and it was nice to see how spotless it was too. We’ll definitely be looking to visit again when it’s warmer and sunny,’ the review read.
Others compared it to the ‘North of France’ and said being there was ‘ like being on a desert island’.
In August of last year Curracloe was named one of Ireland’s cleanest beaches following a survey carried out by Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL).
A fifteen-minute drive from Wexford town, the beach has ample parking, public toilets and a playground, and the Surf Shack is a friendly business which offers surf lessons, but barista coffee, stone-baked pizzas and Featherbed Farm ice cream in summer.
And the success for the county didn’t end there with Monart, which is in The Still in Enniscorthy, named Ireland’s Best Spa, scoring multiples of its closest competitors’ votes. This is the fourth year in a row Monart has won the award.
Summing up the experience at Monart one voter said, ‘One day here is as good as a week’s holiday’. Seafield Hotel & Spa Resort in Gorey was named the sixth best Spa in the country.
Wexford had two representatives in Ireland’s Top Five Small Stays for 2020, with Dunbrody House finishing fourth and Marlfield House fifth in a category won by MacNean House & Restaurant in Co Cavan.
