Retailers already seeing benefit of New Ross bypass
GREATER FOOTFALL IN TOWN WEEKS AFTER OPENING THANKS TO LESS TRAFFIC WOES
BUSINESS owners in New Ross have already seen a boost in business, just two weeks after the opening of the bypass.
Speaking at the municipal council meeting, Cllr Michael Whelan congratulated everyone involved in building the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Bridge and in the Nationwide programme about New Ross.
He said: ‘I was speaking to a retailer in town this week who said she has new customers and she also tells me her busy time of the day was always the drop off and pick up times and now she is finding it busier during the day. I think that is phenomenal and to have the green shoots coming already she is very happy with the bridge has done for the town.’
Cllr Sheehan said: ‘The town is starting to pick itself up. There was a lot of apprehension with the bypass.’
Cathaoirleach Cllr John Fleming said the opening of the bridge was a wonderful day for the town and district. ‘It was great to have a member of the Kennedy family present. Our director starred on TV and the documentary was brilliant advertisement for the town and it came across really well.’
Director of services Eamonn Hore paid tribute to the council staff who organised three major events in late January: the two community bridge walk charity days and the official opening by An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.
He said the Saturday walk was only confirmed following discussions with officials in Madrid on Friday evening, January 24.
‘We managed to pull off three magnificent local events done by council staff and it was professionally done. The town and bringing people into the town.’
