Bridge players show their talent at the 48th Wexford Congress

PRESIDENT of the Contract Bridge Associatio­n of Ireland, Neil Burke was guest of honour at the official opening of the 48th Wexford Bridge Congress in the Talbot Hotel.

In an exciting weekend, the Mixed Pairs competitio­n was won by John Noonan and Mairead Haugh from Bray, with Pierce Kelly and Marian Davenport from Waterford in second place and local players Katherine Lennon and Stephen Scallan in third.

Marie O’Brien and Eithne McDaid from Dublin won the

Intermedia­te B competitio­n, with Betty Fox and Teresa Connolly from Waterford and Winnie Brooks and Kathleen Martin from Dunmore East in second and third places.

Wexford players dominated the Selskar Pharmacy-sponsored Novice Pairs competitio­n, with Eric Pinaqui and Trevor Murphy finishing first and Nicky and Kathleen Nolan in second place.

The Cork duo of Irish internatio­nals Derek O’Gorman and Rory Boland won the Congress Pairs competitio­n, with Enda Murphy, formerly of Rosslare and now based in Dublin, in second place with BJ O’Brien. Secretary Maurice Brosnan and Richard Walsh won the Best of Wexford Bridge Centre.

Fifty pairs vied for the Intermedia­te Pairs, and victory went to the Waterford duo of Helen and Veronica Fitzgerald.

Wexford players Edie Brosnan and Teresa Cowman won the prize for the best A2, while the Bridge Centre prize was won by Miriam Geraghty and Liz Whelan.

The Team of Four competitio­n was won by the Dublin/Cork combinatio­n of BJ O’Brien, Enda Murphy, Rory Boland and Derek O’Gorman.

Local players Katherine Lennon, Jim Doyle and Jim Sexton, accompanie­d by Michelle Moloney from Dublin, took the second prize.

Tom Noonan and Marie McCormack from Wexford won the Beginners’ section, while Kathleen and Nicky Nolan, also from Wexford, were the best of the Novices. Many Wexford pairs also featured in the Open Pairs prizes.

Neil Burke compliment­ed the organising committee on their great work. Tournament directors for the weekend were Brian Lawlor, Huey Daly, Michael Coffey and Jim Doyle.
