This week’s results are first prize – Brigid Conran – €351, second prize – Nick and Niamh – €50, third prize – Nora Byrne – €25. Money raised through the jackpot will be used to keep the town looking well all year round. Draw takes place every Thursday in the CE Office at between 4 p.m. and 4.30 p.m.

HISTORICAL TALK

The presentati­on from Graiguenam­anagh Historical Society ‘Hello Delia Murphy ‘which was a show devised and performed by Delia’s niece, Carmen Cullen at which she gave a talk and sang Delia’s songs and was accompanie­d by musician Gerry Anderson. It was held in the library on Friday, February 7.

Delia Murphy Kiernan (February 16, 1902 – February 11, 1971) was a singer and collector of ballads. She recorded several 78 rpm records in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s including ‘The Spinning Wheel ‘Three Lovely Lassies form Bannon ‘If I Were a Blackbird ‘and ‘The Moonshiner ‘and in 1962 she recorded her only LP, ‘The Queen of Connemara’.

Throughout her life Delia balanced writing, recording and performing her songs with a hectic life as the wife of one of Ireland’s most celebrated ambassador­s TJ Kiernan. Her best epitaph comes from a quote from Liam Clancy ‘Her main contributi­on was that she made us feel that we could respectabl­y sing our own songs A good attendance enjoyed a great night’s entertainm­ent, Well done to all involved.

ST FIACRE’S PILGRIMAGE

The annual Pilgrim in honor of St Fiacre took place at his sixth century church ruins and Holy Well at Ulllard Graignaman­agh on Saturday, February 8, and there was a very good number of people taking part in the annual pilgrim as usual.

The next bingo takes place in the Abbey Hall Graiguenam­anagh on Saturday, February 22, at 8 p.m..A good night’s entertainm­ent is guaranteed.
