The numbers drawn were 1, 4, 15 and 30, and there was no winner. next week’s jackpot stands at €11,050, Reserve jackpot €10,000. TIDY TOWNS JACKPOT
This week’s results are first prize – Brigid Conran – €351, second prize – Nick and Niamh – €50, third prize – Nora Byrne – €25. Money raised through the jackpot will be used to keep the town looking well all year round. Draw takes place every Thursday in the CE Office at between 4 p.m. and 4.30 p.m.
HISTORICAL TALK
The presentation from Graiguenamanagh Historical Society ‘Hello Delia Murphy ‘which was a show devised and performed by Delia’s niece, Carmen Cullen at which she gave a talk and sang Delia’s songs and was accompanied by musician Gerry Anderson. It was held in the library on Friday, February 7.
Delia Murphy Kiernan (February 16, 1902 – February 11, 1971) was a singer and collector of ballads. She recorded several 78 rpm records in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s including ‘The Spinning Wheel ‘Three Lovely Lassies form Bannon ‘If I Were a Blackbird ‘and ‘The Moonshiner ‘and in 1962 she recorded her only LP, ‘The Queen of Connemara’.
Throughout her life Delia balanced writing, recording and performing her songs with a hectic life as the wife of one of Ireland’s most celebrated ambassadors TJ Kiernan. Her best epitaph comes from a quote from Liam Clancy ‘Her main contribution was that she made us feel that we could respectably sing our own songs A good attendance enjoyed a great night’s entertainment, Well done to all involved.
ST FIACRE’S PILGRIMAGE
The annual Pilgrim in honor of St Fiacre took place at his sixth century church ruins and Holy Well at Ulllard Graignamanagh on Saturday, February 8, and there was a very good number of people taking part in the annual pilgrim as usual.
