NEW ROSS SENIORS
Weather-wise it was mixed bag on Thursday, ranging from pleasant February morning sunshine to an afternoon of rain, hail, sleet and snow.
Allied to all that, there was a near-force westerly gale to contend with. Golfing-wise the going was tough after the torrential rain of Wednesday night which left the course in extremely heavy underfoot conditions but very playable.
One must compliment head greenkeeper Seamus Power and his staff for all the tender loving care they have given to the course down the years, making it playable in all kind of conditions - bar it being covered in snow.
The twelve competing teams once again served up some great golf, with ten of the twelve scoring 90 points or more - good shooting in difficult conditions.
We even had a dead heat to find the eventual winners after two teams finished deadlocked on 98 points. By virtue of a better back nine (50/45), the team of Pat Doyle (17), Richie Aylward (20), Jim Kehoe (26) and Les Jastrebski (26) took the honours and the Uisce Beatha.
Second place, also with 98 points (92 + 6), went to the three-person team of Francie Coghlan (16), Billy Redmond (17) and Frank Boyle (23).
The 94 points carded by Martin McGrath (12), Jim ‘Ross’ Ryan (18), Martin Burke (25) and Jamesie Murphy (26) proved good enough to claim third prize.
Nearest the pin prizes were won by Jim Kehoe on the ninth hole and Tony Sexton on the eleventh.
The Seniors’ diary for 2020: March 31, Gowran Park; April 14, Dundrum; April 21, Bunclody; May 19, Coollattin; June 16, Waterford Castle; July 21, Faithlegg; August 20, Dungarvan; September 1, Tipperary; September 2/3, Ballykisteen; September 14, Enniscorthy.
Reserved tee-times will be announced nearer to the individual outings. All players please note that the Dungarvan outing previously scheduled for Monday, August 17, is now transferred to Thursday, August 20, in order to avoid a clash with the big event in New Ross Golf Club.

COURTOWN
It was another quiet week on the fairways of Courtown, with Wednesday’s weekly sweep called off due to the bad weather.
The ladies’ and gents’ singles competition over the weekend of February 22 and 23 went ahead, however.
Winner of the men’s competition was Brendan Travers (10) with 27 points (countback). In second place was Paul McDonald (13), also on 27 points (countback), while third (countback) was Martin Byrne (17), also with 27 points.
Aoife Merrigan (33) was the winner of the ladies’ competition with 21 points.
Storm Dennis played havoc with the week’s fixtures, with both the weekend any combination fourball and the finals of the winter league falling foul of the weather. The re-scheduled winter league final, dinner and presentation date will be announced shortly.
The Wednesday sweep held on February 12 was won by Tony Finn (26) with 32 points. Robert Hogan (18) was second on 31 points (32 – 1).

NEW ROSS
The weather of late seemed intent on stopping people playing golf, but last weekend we had a lovely reprieve from the wind and rain.
The conditions on Sunday in particular were ideal for golf and made for an enjoyable day on the course.
We had an open fourball. It was a treat to be out in dry and calm weather for a change, and the scoring was competitive as a result. A very good number played, and congratulations to the winners.
Results: 1, Mossy Ryan (15) and Denis Kirwan (18), 45 points; 2, Charlie Bradley (19) and P.J. McGrath (17), 45 points (countback); 3, Ray Kent (15) and Jim Foran (20), 44 points.
Next weekend we will have a singles stableford competition. The Captains’ drive-in will take place on March 15 and will be organised in the same manner as last year.
