Glass bypass monument to be unveiled

- By DAVID LOOBY

A 15ft futuristic looking glass and steel hexagonal prism will greet drivers approaching and exiting the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Bridge when it is unveiled next month.

The art piece will be located at a viewing area in Stokestown with the iconic bridge as a panoramic backdrop, and will comprise of glass and steel hexagonal prism structures loosely referencing the local architectural landmark of the nearby Stokestown House Folly. The bridge will be visible through the sculpture, which will be unveiled in early 2020.

Created by artist Caoimhe Kilfeather, the coloured glass will reflect the landscape – the hues and tones of the fields, hedgerows and sky. On overcast days, the glass will appear dense and opaque and on bright summers days more transparent – allowing views through to the surrounding landscape.

Wexford County Council project liaison officer Sean Dobbs said: ‘In this way it is envisaged that the sculpture be dynamic and responsive to its site and to the elements.

‘ The Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Bridge is a state of the art landmark for New Ross and the wider region, representing a bold contemporary design statement for the future. At four and half metres in height the artwork itself will also be a significant and striking visual feature within the landscape for the public to enjoy, while also absorbing the backdrop of the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Bridge.’

He said: ‘ The council are looking at installnig the actual work after Easter. I think it will be very striking with the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Bridge as a backdrop to it. I think the timing will be great after the excitement over the bypass opening – which has generated a lot of interest.’
