Family of man (24) with Covid-19 issues warning to youths

- By DAVID LOOBY

The family of a 24-year-old man who ended up in the ICU at a local hospital with Covid-19 have urged all young people to take the illness very seriously.

The former Good Counsel College student had no pre-existing conditions and was in the fullness of health when he was struck down with the virus.

The college posted the following message on their website for current and past students: ‘For students, it is great to be young but we must remember that we are not invincible and that the Covid-19 virus can have serious effects on our health.

‘We have been made aware of a fit and healthy young man (24) of our acquaintance who has contracted the virus and is currently in ICU on a ventilator. We keep him and his family in our thoughts and hope that he and all affected by the virus make full recoveries.’

Deputy principal Aidan O’Brien said: ‘People might think because they are young that they are invulnerable to the virus so we wanted to highlight to them that they are vulnerable. The man’s parents were in touch with me (to get the message out) as they were very anxious that no other family or any other young fella would have to go through what they have gone through.’

The young man is making a good recovery. ‘ Somehow he acquired this virus and ended up in the ICU which is something neither he or his family ever imagined would befall him. We’d urge people to be extra vigilant; elderly people are because the impact on them can be catastrophic but as can be seen across the world so can it be on young people,’ he said.
