Kehoe launches portal for military recruits

- By BRENDAN KEANE

MINISTER Paul Kehoe has launched an online portal for former members of the defence forces to rejoin as the country continues its efforts to curtail the spread of Covid-19.

Commenting to this newspaper Minister Kehoe said applicants can register their interest by clicking on a link on the careers page of the website www.military.ie.

‘ The focus of this scheme will be on those with skills and expertise required to fill specialist vacancies that currently exist in the Permanent Defence Force,’ he said.

‘ This includes technicians, fitters, chefs, communications and IT specialists, and naval staff,’ he added.

It’s expected personnel rejoining will assist in delivering Defence Forces supports as part of the COVID 19 response

‘A scheme to re-commission former PDF officers already exists and my department is also inviting expressions of interest from those with specialist skills who wish to be re-commissioned,’ said Minister Kehoe.

‘I know there are individuals who previously served in the PDF and would like to serve again and I would encourage such people to register their interest and to re-join,’ he added.

The Chief-of-Staff will identify the vacancies to be filled and the specified time period will also be outlined along with recommendations to the Minister.

‘ The focus is on addressing skills deficits which cannot be resolved in a sustainable or timely manner from within existing personnel resources,’ said Minister Kehoe.

Those wishing to rejoin will be required to meet a range of eligibility criteria including medical and physical fitness.

They will also need to be within the rank age requirements for the duration of their enlistment.

Minister Kehoe said full terms and conditions will be available shortly and former officers can get information relating to requirements for their ranks through the website.
