LOCAL SERVICES
In these unprecedented times Fethard-on-Sea are extremely lucky to have their own supermarket and filling station, Pharmacy and post office.
These local businesses are providing an invaluable service right on our doorstep while the present restrictions on travel are in place. We owe them and their staff a huge debt of gratitude for continuing to provide this service in challenging conditions. Well done to all involved.
Many similar size villages have lost these type of services in recent years. It is important that when the current crisis ends that we continue to support these businesses and the other local businesses who have been forced to close due to Government guidelines. It is only by supporting local business that we ensure we keep these services in the village in the future.
DR COX SURGERY
Dr Cox’s Surgery in Fethard is now closed to appointments. We will only see urgent cases. Please do not call to the surgery, phone if you need advice. Our phone lines have been inundated with phone calls so please be patient. We are doing prescriptions as normal and will send them to our local chemists. Your patience is appreciated at this difficult time.
HOOK TOURISM
Hook Tourism have closed both the Fethard and Duncannon offices till further notice due to COVID19. If anyone needs anything printed urgently then email info@hooktourism.com and we will endeavour to help.
FETHARD ST MOGUE’S GAA - LOOK BACK AT 2000.
With the present restrictions on games it gives an opportunity to look back on the success 20 years ago of our Junior B football team who won the County Junior B Football title for the first time.
They defeated Adamstown in the District Final and it took three games before they eventually overcame Tara Rocks in the county semi-final. The previous year’s beaten finalists volunteers were the opposition in the final. The volunteers dominated the first half to lead by 0-8 to 1-0 at half time. However Fethard put in an impressive display in the second half to win by 2-6 to 10-0.
Four members of the squad created history by completing the full set of adult football championship medals. John Banville, Jody Waters, Tom Hickey and Ger Foley won titles in Junior A 1984, Intermediate 1993, Senior 1998 and Junior B 2000.
While these and the other experienced members of the squad played a big part in this success, up and coming young players such as top scorer Mark Hanton, James Benson, Trevor Foley and Derek Browne also played their part and none more so than Damien Browne, who scored 1-3 in the final or the tremendous saves of Paul Foley in the goal.
Full team, Jody Waters (capt) Paul Foley, David Tweedy, John Banville, Tom Hickey, Lar Waters, Dermot Nunan, Lar Molloy, Charlie Walsh, Derek Browne, James Benson, Trevor Foley, Damien Browne, Peter Whelan, Mark Hanton with subs who played on the day Quinten Hearne and Patrick Gleeson.
