BANNOW SHOW IS CANCELLED

- By MARIA PEPPER

THE Bannow and Rathangan Show at Killag, Duncormick, one of the biggest agricultural gatherings of its kind in the country, has been cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis.

Secretary Elizabeth Freeman confirmed that the decision not to hold the 71st annual show on July 9, which would have attracted many thousands of people to the area, was taken following lengthy discussions between the chairpeson and committee members.

The show has been cancelled out of concern for the well-being of all the exhibitors, sponsors, visitors, organisers and committee members.

‘We are working towards a bigger and better show in 2021,’ said Elizabeth, thanking everyone for their support and continued loyalty over the years.

Next year’s event has been scheduled to take place in July.

‘With the ongoing crisis across the globe due to the coronavirus, the organising committee have taken the decision to cancel,’ added the chairperson, Betty Stafford.

‘With such uncertainty about the virus, we couldn’t ensure the safety and well-being of all involved with our show. As our show date draws nearer, it was impossible for the committee to meet safely to prepare and plan for the event. It was not a decision that we made lightly, but we feel it is the correct one at this moment in time.’

Betty said many of the show’s volunteers and committee are currently cocooning and self-isolating to keep safe.

‘Our show depends on this volunteerism to continue and prosper. I wish them all well as they do their utmost to keep their loved ones safe.’

‘Our sponsors play an important part in the success of our show. So many businesses are now in lockdown and waiting to see when they can re-open. We hope all goes well for them. We wish them well. To all the businesses who support our show, our thoughts are with you’, she said.

‘So many businesses showcase their business on show day by taking a stand on the field. This is an important part of the show.’

Betty thanked all the people who are working so diligently in a very difficult situation, including health care and retail and she saluted them for their courage.

‘We hope to see you at our show next year. In the meantime, stay safe. Let’s do what is asked of us so that we can see our way forward. Let’s look for something positive to take from this crisis.’

It’s the fourth time in its 70-year history that Bannow Show has been cancelled. It was previously called off due to an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease on one occasion and twice due to flooding of the site during extreme weather conditions.
