Readers making a stab at best team
SOME OF our readers have risen to the considerable challenge of trying to pick their best Wexford hurling team since 1970, following the completion of Brendan Furlong’s deliberations on the matter last week.
First up we have a formidable side selected by Sid Browne, with three changes in personnel as he has opted for Teddy O’Connor, Willie Murphy and Ned Buggy instead of Tom Neville, Dan Quigley and John Quigley respectively.
Sid’s full team is: Damien Fitzhenry, Liam Ryan, Darragh Ryan, Teddy O’Connor; Liam Dunne, Michael Jacob Snr., Willie Murphy; Larry O’Gorman, George O’Connor; Diarmuid O’Keeffe, Martin Quigley, Martin Storey; Ned Buggy, Tony Doran, Lee Chin.
Sid also supplied the following eight substitutes: Pat Nolan, Johnny Murphy, Adrian Fenlon, Jimmy Prendergast, Tom Dempsey, Christy Keogh, Colm Kehoe, and Colm Doran.
Meanwhile, John Bennett from Rosbercon, the well-known G.A.A. referee and snooker official with New Ross Workmen’s Club, also made a stab at picking a team.
He has included 14 of Brendan’s 15 players, with Conor McDonald making it ahead of current team-mate Diarmuid O’Keeffe.
‘I moved some players around so I could fit them in,’ John explained. ‘This is a very strong back line. I think Colm Doran and Larry Murphy were unlucky not to make the team.’
John’s full team is: Damien Fitzhenry; Darragh Ryan, Tom Neville, Liam Ryan; Larry O’Gorman, Dan Quigley, Liam Dunne; George O’Connor, Michael Jacob Snr.; Lee Chin, Conor McDonald, Martin Storey; John Quigley, Tony Doran, Martin Quigley.
