CORMAC’S CELEBRATE: St. Cormac’s clinched the Wexford Football League Premier Division title with a three-goal blast against fellow title chasers Wexford Bohs in Boolavogue on April 7, 2005.

The home side, with games in hand, were long-time favourites to clinch the crown, but a victory for second-placed Bohs would have prolonged the chase for glory.

The relief around the ground was there for all to see when Marty Kelly stroked home a first-half penalty, and Liam O’Loughlin doubled the advantage in the 51st minute.

Toddy Walsh pulled one back for the town team, but Kelly then punished a foul on Donal Burke to seal a 3-1 win for Cormac’s from the penalty spot.

Nicky Kirwan was clearly aiming for a point when he stood over a free in the second minute, but his lobbed effort into the elements was misjudged by the Derry side’s netminder and ended in the net.

And it made all the difference in the long run in a tight contest.
