Oulart EASTER GREETINGS
Happy Easter to all the readers of these Local Notes. In these strange times of ‘cocooning’ and ‘social distancing’ we hope and pray that you and all your loved ones stay safe as we wait for the Covid-19 curve to flatten and the worst of the pandemic to pass. We are all learning which things are really important in life and realising that there are many things beyond our control. Meanwhile, let us adhere to the guidelines, count our blessings, help others in any way we can and look forward with hope, for we are not alone.
IMPORTANT CONTACT NUMBERS
Oulart Garda Bernard McGinley’s mobile number is 086 8581548. The contact number for the Enniscorthy Garda Station is 053 9242580 and the numbers to ring in an emergency are 999 or 112. The landline for the Parochial House (parish priest, Fr Paddy Browne) is 053 9136139.
KNOW YOUR EIRCODE
You are requested to have your Eircode readily available when you ring the Gardaí or any emergency service so that you can be reached without delay. Don’t rely on remembering the Eircode; it is best to have it written down where you can easily see and reach it. Alternatively, you could also save your Eircode in your mobile contacts and have it to hand when you need it.
GAA/CAMOGIE HERE TO HELP
Oulart-The Ballagh GAA and camogie personnel are available to help people in the local community with shopping, collecting medications etc or in any other necessary way and assure you that help is only a phone call away. Even with the 2km restriction, a member is always available to help. Contact GAA chairman, Bartle Sinnott (087 2041896), camogie chairperson Patrick Fortune (087 9339950) or Coiste na nÓg chairperson, Liz Freeman (087 7560871) all of whom will make sure you get the help you need.
‘MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE’
The bottle is a readily identifiable green and white plastic bottle that is available from any pharmacy for a couple of euro, though any small plastic or glass bottle would do the job. On a sheet of paper write down your accurate, relevant medical information (any underlying conditions, recent surgeries, prescribed medications etc) and other vital information and put it in the bottle.
Then put a label on the bottle, stating ‘Message in a Bottle’ and pop it in the fridge because in the event of a fire the fridge usually remains intact. (BJ1) If the emergency services are called to the house they know where to find the information that will enable them to make quick and accurate decisions regarding the patient.
If the patient needs to be brought to hospital, the bottle with the important information is brought with them. Then the hospital emergency ward medical team have the vital information at hand.
DOWN MEMORY LANE
This week’s trip down memory lane dates from November 2, 1991, when Oulart-The Ballagh Minor hurlers defeated Monageer-Boolavogue in the Roinn one county final, in Bellefield.
Paul Dempsey was in goal while Stephen Hayden, Alan O’Connor and Jimmy O’Brien were in the full-back line. Ronan Doyle was centre-back and on the wings were Thomas Cullen and Barry Murphy. Paddy Fortune and Kieran Kehoe (one goal two points) played in mid-field. Niall O’Connor, John Ormonde and Pierce Redmond (one goal one point) were half forwards while Vincent Stamp (one goal), William Harris (one goal one point) and Jonathon Mythen completed the line-out. Davy Fortune and Declan Kehoe came on as substitutes.
Interestingly, among the Monageer-Boolavogue players were Edmund Rowesome and Paul Finn. Three of Oulart’s goals were scored in the first 15 minutes and the full-time score was four goals four points to six points.
REELING IN THE YEARS
In the Echo newspaper, dated October 29, 1982, it was reported that Oulart-The Ballagh camogie club had organised a Mayoral event and that the mayor would be officially elected and receive the chain of office at a Supper Dance in the Hydro Hotel on November 19.
It was further announced that members of the camogie club’s Junior championship winning team of 1981 would be presented with their medals at that same function.
