Pupils celebrate Communion day
THE amazing resilience of children was evident in the way St Canice’s pupils celebrated their Holy Communion day in some style, despite the actual event being postponed due to the current health crisis.
The pupils were due to gather at the Church of the Assumption in Rosbercon on Saturday, May 2, along with pupils from Shanbogh NS, so it was with a heavy heart and some tears, that they learned that the big day was postponed.
Planned family gatherings, football matches and a disco were all of a sudden confined to an unknown date later in the year or even in 2021, but the undaunted children marked the day in their own unique ways, helped by their parents.
The day started out with a video from Senan’s teacher Mr O’Gorman who made the effort to dress in his suit and chat to the children with his usual good humour. He promised them that they would make their Communion at a later date.
Senan Nolan had been looking forward to a fun day with family and friends. A big game of soccer was also in the plans, and a Man United cake. His mother Annmarie said: ‘ We had planned to have the day at home as we have lots of toddlers and new babies in the family. I suppose we knew from an early stage that the Communion wouldn’t go ahead so we decided that we would still have a fun day and a little party to mark the day. Senan got his game of soccer be it with a smaller group of people and a cake and lots of treats. We also had lots of messages from family and Senan’s friends. That evening our neighbour and friend Catriona called over with a card for Senan. He was so delighted with the lovely gesture. We ended the evening with a movie and popcorn.’
Christina Cummins enjoyed a chilled out day with her mother Gail and family. Gail said: ‘Christina wore a headband of white flowers as she looked outside at what was to be. I took a pic of her doing that, to ensure we had a nice memory, as our way of remembering the day further down the line. Then in the afternoon, we had fun food and sat on the balcony which we are lucky to have in such lovely weather. Her glass of Mi-Wadi tropical fruits was raised (in replace of champagne), toasting to the end of Covid-19, and thinking of her schoolfriends at that moment! A humble fun filled day, mostly spent outdoors on the swings and playing games with her two brothers and myself!’
Tom Hickey had a lovely day with his parents Olive and John and brother and sister, Conor and Emma. Olive said: ‘ Tom got into the glad rags for a few photos to send to family and friends and then the kids spent the rest of the day in the garden jumping into a freezing cold paddling pool.’
Ugna Buckute made a new delicious kind of cookies with her mother.
Lailah Jordan’s day started with a special breakfast of pancakes, strawberries and Nutella.
Lailah spent the day with her family, enjoying a lovely a walk and lots of fun in the garden. She finished the day with pizza and a movie night.
Kate Ryan got all dressed up for the occasion. It was a case of double celebrations in the Ryan/Delaney household as her Dad Eamonn was celebrating his birthday too.
Her mother Deborah Delaney said: ‘Kate then got dressed up for some photos and a WhatsApp call to some family and friends. We ended the day with some lovely pizza and ice-cream. Definitely a day to remember.’
