SYMPATHY

The death took place in recent weeks of Jim Flynn in Oxford. A native of Kilbraney Lane, Jim made Oxford his home a long time ago where he lined out in hurling and football for the local Eire Óg GAA club in his younger years. Sincere sympathy is extended to his many relatives in the Gusserane area.

PIETA HOUSE

Gusserane GAA are supporting a fundraiser in aid of Pieta and the prevention of suicide later this month. The challenge is to see how many kilometres the club can run/walk in 24 hours from 7.30 p.m. on Friday, May 29, to 7.30 p.m. the following day.

The club is looking for volunteers in the community to get involved, either on their own or with family members (maximum 4). Runners/walkers can pick their own time slot and then go for exercise within the 5km distance of your house, as per government guidelines. Each time slot is for 30 minutes. The club will then track the total number of kilometres completed. Donations can be made online.

The walking track at the Tintern Complex will be made available also and the lights will be on throughout the night – for those who would prefer to use that facility. The track will be stewarded. To book a time slot please contact Shane Cullen at 087 9924994. To donate to this cause visit the Gusserane Facebook or Twitter pages and click on the link provided.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

The following items appeared in the Gusserane notes in May 2012.

DVD - A video of the cycle trip to Kennedy Park held recently will be showing in Power’s, Ballycullane on this Saturday 20th May at 9pm. It is kindly sponsorsed by Denis and Mai Cadogan. All are welcome.

FIELD DAY - Gusserane Coiste na nOg are having a field day and fun day on 4th June which is also the Bank Holiday weekend. They are having U6 and U8 hurling and football blitzes as well as U6 nd U8 camogie games. The All Ireland Camogie O’Duffy cup is expected to be in attendance. There will also be usual entertainment for all the children. Please support.

PARISH LEAGUE - After months of preparation the day has finally come for the four corners of the parish to do battle to see who will claim the Tintern Parish League cup for 2012. The competition was instigated by the late Seamus Keevans in the mid-eighties but is now being resurrected with a view to resurrecting forgotten talent to supplement the Gusserane junior and senior teams.

This Saturday sees neighbours Gusserane and Boley doing battle. There is normally little love lost between these two and there is no reason to think that Saturday’s fixture will be any different. Ballycullane and St Leonards will take to the field the following week with the eagerly awaited finals taking place over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The Ballycullane mentors in desperation have asked that if anyone in that area is interested in taking part they should contact Shane Cullen immediately. Johnny Flynn is the Gusserane manager and is quietly confident that his preparations will bear fruit over the coming weeks.

LADIES FOOTBALL -+ Well done to the under 14 girls on a great win in their opening game of the campaign against Horeswood last week. Hard luck meanwhile to the under 16 girls who were beaten away to Ballygarrett, also last week.

SKITTLES - The AGM of the South East Skittle Association will be held in Doyle`s Bar in Carrig On Bannow on Thursday 17th May at 9pm. All are welcome to attend and please bring a friend.

CARDS - It was nail-biting stuff in the hall last week with a four way tie for first place. The teams of Willie Kehoe, Mick Reville and Mick Hanlon, Ann Duggan, Sean Doyle and Joe Ryan, Karl Hall, James Larkin and Johnny Cogley, Noel Redmond, Declan Egan and Paddy Murphy could not be separated. The last game draw went to David Murpphy, James McDonald and Pat Whelan. Raffle winners were James McDonald, Noel Redmond, Larry Power and Peter Stafford.

HURLING - The week gone by was a good one for the Gusserane hurlers. The junior hurlers opened their campaign with a comprehensive win over Ger O`Hans. The minor hurlers followed this with a great win at home to Liam Mellows on Tuesday night. Then on Thursday evening the under 14 hurlers recorded a great win over St Annes in their championship match. The junior hurlers were back in action last weekend but squandered a three point lead to eventually share the spoils with near neighbours, Bannow/Ballymitty in their second round championship
