FETHARD ST MOGUE’S GAA

Our Blast from the Past this week is a final of a different kind from 2009. The Fethard senior footballers played St Martin’s in the relegation final in Taghmon.

This was tense a low scoring affair. St Martin’s started better getting the first point of the match and also forcing a good save from William Doyle.

Mark Hanton opened Fethard’s scoring with a good point before a good passing movement saw Damien Browne finish to the net after eight minutes. Jim Byrne extended the lead but both sides were then guilty of some bad misses.

St Martin’s kicked a number of point scoring attempts wide while Fethard spurned at least two clear goal scoring chances. St Martin’s pulled two points back either side of a Jim Byrne pointed free to leave the half time score 1-3 to 0-3.

A great point from Kevin Rowe on the resumption extended the lead but both sides continued to miss chances. A Christopher Colfer shot blazed across the goal after good work by Kevin Rowe while St Martin’s continued to kick the wides though the Fethard defence should be credited with putting them under a lot of pressure.

Kevin Rowe, who tormented the Martins defence all day saw two shots deflected for 45’s which were both expertly converted by Jim Byrne. St Martin’s got their third point of the half with about five minute remaining to set up a tense finish.

The Fethard defence with Andy Donoghue and Thomas Colfer to the fore held the line well to make sure Fethard went on to compete in the senior championship again the following year, winning on a 1-6 to 0-6 scoreline.

St Martin’s were not down for long and amazingly the two sides met again in the Senior County final just four years later in 2013.

Unfortunately St Martin’s were the better team on that day but that is a story for another day.
