Oh buoy, oh buoy, port works secured

-

WEXFORD County Council has undertaken to prioritise infrastructure investment at the Port of New Ross in order to enhance operations and safety for visiting ships to the port.

The improvements, which will take place over the month of June and into early July, will see the upgrading of buoyage as well as improvements to harbour security and general maintenance works. Senior officials from Wexford County Council met with port customer representatives to brief them on the works to be completed and to discuss the challenges of minimising impact on business operations during the delivery of the essential improvements. The works will result in a temporary suspension of pilotage operations to allow the river and shore-based essential improvements to take place, while the port will remain open to marine leisure and fishing vessels that do not require a piloting service. New Ross District chairperson, Cllr John Fleming, said: ‘The port is an integral part of New Ross area and many families have worked in the associated industries down through the years. Given the significant changes in marine legislation in recent years, it is my hope that the Council – working with the existing customer base and local industry – can maintain the port as a viable business well into the future.’

Cllr Fleming also extended his congratulations and good wishes to Captain Luke Foley, former Harbour Master on his recent retirement.
