Bank of Ireland carers’ card targets ‘vulnerable’ customers

-

BANK of Ireland has introduced its new Carers’ Card to support vulnerable customers and their carers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Using the Debit card, daily usage and spending is monitored by the Bank’s Vulnerable Customer Unit to provide a safe and secure way for trusted relatives and friends or designated carers to manage the day-to-day living expenses of those who are in their care. The new Carers’ Card gives controlled access to the accounts of the person being looked after, with built-in safeguards such as limits on cash withdrawals.

A dedicated carers helpline has now been set up assist all involved, and a spokesperson for Bank of Ireland said the new service was a response to a very real need in the community.

‘In the absence of formal arrangements such as power of attorney, it can often be difficult for carers to access cash for day-to-day expenses and so the Carers’ Card is an optional feature of the Bank’s Vulnerable Customer Account.

‘When Covid-19 happened, we prioritised cocooning supports and other initiatives that addressed an immediate need for our vulnerable customers. However, we had already challenged ourselves to solve a problem which pre-dates the pandemic and will persist afterwards. Carers provide our customers with invaluable emotional and physical support but it’s often difficult for them to help with managing day-to-day living expenses.

‘ The Carer’s Card is a really practical solution that helps our customers and their carers while providing protection and transparency to both.’

For more information on the Carers’ Card, customers can call the dedicated helpline on 1800 946 146 between the hours of 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m., Monday to Friday.
