DOUBLE DEFEAT: The two Wexford teams in contention for the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup departed in the second round games held on Friday, May 29.

Wexford Youths saw their dreams of a lengthy run dashed when Premier Division Cork City struck for a goal at the end of either half to triumph 2-0 in Ferrycarrig Park.

And although North End United conceded in the fourth minute after making the long journey west to face Galway United, they held firm for the remainder of the game and gave an overall performance of the highest quality given the gulf between the sides.

LEADING LADIES: Two Wexford players travelled to Croke Park to collect their awards after being selected on the Tesco Ladies’ Gaelic football Division 3 team of the National League.

Sharon Kehoe from Kilmore filled the centre-back spot, while Adamstown’s Chantelle Martin was included at corner-forward.

NECK AND NECK: The battle for the national point-to-point trainers’ championship between Colin Bowe from Kiltealy and near neighbour Donnchadh Doyle of Ballindaggin ended in a tie on 28 winners each.

Over three weekend meetings, Doyle drew a blank while Bowe’s sole winner on the Saturday was enough to bring him level.

It was Doyle’s first time to savour success, while Bowe had won the title outright on two earlier occasions.

HOSTS WITH THE MOST: Host club Gorey were among the medals when the Community Games gymnastics finals were held.

Beibhinn McDonald won gold in the Under-9 category, while Aalayiah Watters was the Under-11 victor.

Sadhbh Quinn from Castlebridge/Crossabeg led the way at Under-13, while Eve Maguire was the Under-15 winner.

The boys’ events resulted in gold medals for Tobiah Walters (Under-9), Rúairí Martin (Under-11) and Jamie Doyle (Under-13).

BIG ATTRACTION: The presence of the Irish women’s Six Nations trophy and Nora Stapleton, the team’s number 10, made the primary schools end-of-season rugby blitz in Park Lane a real winner.

Taghmon were winners of the People Newspapers trophy, while sudden death extra-time was needed before Gorey Central finally shook off Kilmore to capture the Billy Kelly trophy.

A total of 13 primary schools from around the county took part in a well-contested event.
