FETHARD ST MOGUE’S GAA

While the victory of the Junior Football team in the GAA Centenary Year of 1984 has been documented before it was the events from 27 years earlier that featured in some of the post victory celebrations.

As commented on in an article in the New Ross Standard at the time the local correspondent for the Standard and former referee Larry Larkin attended a victory reunion in the Hotel Naomh Seosamh some time later.

Larry was reminded by local GAA Stalwart, Mikie Barden Snr that his refereeing performance in the junior semi-final of 1957 left a bit to be desired and that he hadn’t treated Fethard too well on the day. It was noted that his performance was so poor that he was not appointed for the final. Although Larry claimed he could not recall his display being sub-standard he was also approached by another former Fethard player who had waited 27 years to raise the issue with him.

In a game which Fethard came from 11 points down to win they were awarded a 50 in the second half and had a strong wind behind them. Their reliable free-taker Larry Bird would have been expected to score this but when the referee placed the ball 70 yards from the goal it raised consternation in the Fethard team. When the error was pointed out to the referee he advised them to get on with the game or he would give a free the other way.

As it turned out it was all for the best as Larry took the free from the 70 yard line and his shot dropped just short and went in off the underside of the crossbar for a goal. Had the ball been placed on the 50 yard line it would probably have been only a point and the end result could have been different.

Just goes to prove that while we always think things were better in former times it seems referees made mistakes back then also.
