REPAIRS

Following recent repairs the parish council are pleased to announce that electricity has been restored to the ball alley in Gusserane. The knock-on advantage of this work is that water has also now been restored to the tap in the graveyard.

A BLAST FROM THE PAST

The following Gusserane notes appeared in the New Ross Standard of March 1971.

NARROW ESCAPE – Twenty years old Johnny Flynn, son of Mr and Mrs Willie Flynn, Kilbraney was almost buried alive recently when the walls of a 20 feet deep trench collapsed on top of him. The accident happened at Oxford, England. He had gone to inspect the trench when it caved in.

Fortunately for Johnny, his plight was seen by his mate who knew his exact location and succeeded in exposing his head till he secured help. Johnny was trapped for a long time before he was released, but he was none the worse for his escapade. His head was about three feet below the surface when it was exposed by his colleague.

GUSSERANE HALL – Gusserane Hall was packed on Friday night of last week when the Wellingtonbridge group presented their Tops of the parish. The audience were delighted with the old favourites, Paddy Doyle and Mick Gleeson. Other variety concerts have also been arranged for the hall.

ST PATRICK’S DAY – St Patrick’s Day was a very special day for the congregation in Gusserane Church. The speciality was provided by Hilary Murphy, New Ross, whose appropriate selection of hymns, marches and tunes was greatly appreciated. It was Hilary’s second St Patrick’s Day appearance in Gusserane Church to play the organ he suppied two years ago.

GUSSERANE BEATEN – Gusserane’s schoolboys, who invariably have a strong representation on the Tintern team, got a taste of their own medicne on Monday evening when they played Poulfur in a challenge match in O’Rahilly Park. Paddy Murphy’s charges were in rare form and they romped home winners by 4-5 to 1-2.
