TOP OF THE CLASS: Over 1,500 children from 35 schools competed in a very successful Allianz primary school sports day held in Bree on June 15, 2005.

The event returned to its traditiona­l venue after a gap of four years, and the individual winners in the girls’ categories included Annie Stafford (Bree), Aoife Rossiter (Piercestow­n), Ciara Roche (Ballyought­er), Emma Roche (Bree), Tara McGuinness (Bree), Orla Donohoe (Kilmyshall), Sandra Lawlor (Ballygarre­tt), Hannah Sullivan (St. Aidan’s), Anne Marie Kane (Courtnacud­dy), Eileen Duggan (Kilrane), Gillian Byrne (Bree), and Sinéad Doyle (Crossabeg).

Turning to the boys’ events, gold medals went to Robbie Cleary (St. Senan’s), Ciarán Joyce (St. Senan’s), current county hurler Pádraig Foley (Crossabeg), Dylan Walsh (St. Senan’s), Niall Moore (Mayglass), Seán Murphy (Mayglass), Kieron McCabe (Bree), Paddy Devereux (Crossabeg), Jordan Broaders (Kilrane), Brian White (Murrintown), Conor Shovlin (Crossabeg), and Seán Crean (Bree).

TOMBRACK THROUGH: Tombrack were the final Wexford team standing in the Leinster Junior women’s soccer cup, qualifying for the last eight with a 2-0 win over Whitehall Rangers in Bunclody.

Tracey McCormack powered a fantastic header to the net midway through the first-half, while Samantha Cushe doubled the advantage ten minutes from the break after great work from Martina Flood.

KENNEDY CUP WIN: The Wexford Under-13 squad tasted honours in the Bowl section of the prestigiou­s Kennedy Cup in Limerick, with a goal from Steven Kinsella of Gorey Rangers securing a 1-0 win over South Tipperary.

RATHNURE OUT OF LUCK: There was no luck for the Rathnure Under-14 girls at the annual Féile na nGael in Cork, as they bowed out after losses to host team Ballinhass­ig (2-3 to 0-1), Valley Rovers (2-1 to 1-0), and Thomastown from Kilkenny (4-3 to 2-0).

Amy Ryan from St. Martin’s finished seventh out of 19 participan­ts in the skills competitio­n.

TREATED WITH DISDAIN: The Wexford Under-14 footballer­s were treated with disdain at the annual Leinster tournament in Clonad, Co. Laois, with the games played on a pitch without nets or markings, while the adjoining dressing-rooms weren’t opened.

Current county hurler Matthew O’Hanlon (St. James’) was among the most notable names on the travelling squad, along with future Senior football captain Michael Furlong of Adamstown, Michael O’Regan (then with Sarsfields), Willie Devereux (St. Martin’s), Alan Nolan and Barry O’Gorman (Taghmon-Camross).
