RECORD BREAKER: St. Ives Cycling Club member Avril Swan, a native of Wexford, broke a national record when she competed in a gruelling one hundred-mile time trial.

Covering the course in four hours one minute and one second, she posted the tenth fastest time ever ridden in Britain by a female, and claimed the Irish national record in the process.

BANNOW BEST: The exceptiona­l finishing prowess of Bannow’s Mairéad Moran proved to be the difference between two well-matched teams when they beat Castlebrid­ge by 4-1 to 3-0 in the Allianz Rackard League Roinn ‘B’ camogie final in Wexford Park on June 18, 2010.

She accounted for all of the winners’ scores, receiving best support from Kate Doyle, Eilish Cullen and Leona Reville, while Linzi Lanigan, Larah Campbell, Shauna Kelly and Jessie Harding tried hard for the runners-up.

SUPER SEVEN: D.M.P. athletes secured a fantastic seven gold medals, three silvers and two bronzes at the Leinster championsh­ips in Tullamore.

Marco Pons won the Under-18 discus, Oliver Jaeger was successful in the Under-16 shot putt, and Clara McGuinness came first in the Under-18 shot putt.

Their hammer throwers were also in great form, with Charlotte O’Farrell, Thomas Furlong and Mary Bohanna all leading their respective fields, while Jennifer Bohanna won the Under-15 javelin.

BULLSEYE FOR CULLEN: Jason Cullen won the Co. Wexford Darts Organisati­on’s sixth ranking tournament of the year, beating Mick ‘Flash’ Dwyer in the final.

Pat McCormack and John Browne were the defeated semi-finalists, while Paul Murphy, David Bradley, Noel Redmond and David Murphy bowed out in the last eight.

TOP TRAINER: Aidan O’Brien was crowned as the top trainer at Royal Ascot following the success of Lily Langtry, Mikhail Glinka and Starspangl­edbanner in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes, the Group 3 Queen’s Vase, and the Golden Jubilee Stakes respective­ly.

GAMES WINNERS: Among the vast array of gold medal winners at the Community Games county athletics finals in Bree were Cathal Cummins (Bannow-Ballymitty), Jason Murphy (Horeswood), Ryan Murray (Bree/Davidstown), Joe Mooney (Adamstown), Aaron Maddock (Piercestow­n-Murrintown), Corrine Kenny (Gorey), Anastasia Breen (Tintern), Clare O’Gorman (Taghmon), Jane Shovlin (Castlebrid­ge/Crossabeg) and Dervla McCabe (Bree/Davidstown).

RUNNING RIOT: Wexford edged closer to the Gala Intermedia­te camogie championsh­ip semi-finals with a resounding 4-20 to 0-6 victory against Kilkenny in Wexford Park.

It was 2-13 to 0-3 in favour of the rampant home side at half-time.
