DONOHOE’S SOCIETY

Donohoe’s Golf society played Quinnagh House on Sunday, with 18 players making the long trip to Carlow.

The winner was club Chairman Andrew Holden with a great score of 38 points. He is making winning a habit lately, with two victories and a second place in three weeks.

Second with another great score of 36 points was Nicky Cahill, and third place was filled by Paul Breen with 34 points. Charlie O’Brien won the birdie money with two birdies.

Next Sunday we play the Burrows. Please be there by 9.15 a.m. at the latest.

COURTOWN

With the latest easing of the Government’s Covid-19 restrictions, competition golf returned to Courtown for the first time on Tuesday of this week with ladies’ singles 18-hole and nine-hole competitions.

Wednesday, July 1, sees the start of the Gorey Guardian summer series with a gents’ open singles competition. The summer series will be running every Wednesday for July and August, with some fantastic prizes to be won thanks to our kind sponsor, the Gorey Guardian.

Thursday, July 2, is a ladies’ and gents’ Seniors open. Wednesday’s and Thursday’s competitions are both open competitions, and we are looking forward to welcoming visitors from across the county and beyond.

The course is in fantastic condition after the long lay-off, and we are sure our visitors and members alike will find it a challenging and rewarding experience.

Friday, July 3, sees the return of the ever-popular Fridays nine and dine competition (starting at 4 p.m.) which this year is an any combination competition.

The club Captains will have their much anticipated Captains’ drive-in on Saturday, July 4, with the ceremonial drive-in taking place at 1 p.m.

This year, due to Covid-19 restrictions, we will have both morning (10.30 a.m.) and afternoon (1.30 p.m.) shotgun starts. There will be food served upstairs in the restaurant following both sessions of golf.

This week also sees the re-opening of the club’s Mossel Bay restaurant on Tuesday, June 30, and Ian and Siobhán will be welcoming back members and their guests and visitors.

Some necessary measures will be in place to ensure compliance with the Government’s return to business guidelines.

WEXFORD

We are back to competition time again at Wexford Golf Club. At this time all members should have set up their competition purse as this is the only way to pay club competition entry fees from now on.

Competitors should also note the new competition rules regarding the marking and signing of score cards, placing in bunkers etc. as outlined on the BRS memo sent out to all members on Saturday evening.

Our first competition, a ladies’ and gents’ 18-hole open singles, commenced yesterday (Monday) and continues through today, so if you are an early reader of this newspaper there is still time to get your name on the timesheet.

The very popular Tuesday evening 14-hole mixed semiopen competitions will commence this evening at 5 p.m. Until the next phase of the relaxing of golf, to conform with current recommendations, this will be a fourball competition format for the time being.

This mixed competition will continue each Tuesday evening during the summer and into the autumn for as long as daylight allows and will more than likely revert to a foursomes format when Kathleen and Larry are given permission to do so.

Tomorrow (Wednesday, July 1) we have a ladies’ and gents’ open fourball competition over 14 holes, and on Friday there is a three-person team event over 14 holes with two cards to count on each hole.

On next Saturday and Sunday we will hold the Seamus Quaid Memorial Cup, a gents’ singles, sponsored by the gardaí at Wexford Garda Station in memory of their former colleague who was murdered while on duty in 1980.

Senior club members will be very happy to see their Tuesday morning competitions resume, when the first club Seniors competition will be a team of four scramble on July 7.

The latest winners of the daily draw for a voucher in the Pro Shop are Mary Burke, Catherine Carmody, Anthony O’Dowd, John Simpson, Declan Rossiter, Martina Dempsey and Declan Rossiter, who was fortunate enough to come up for the second time this week.

This raffle finished on last Sunday, and a donation from the proceeds will be made to the Hope Centre in Enniscorthy. The Pro Shop raffle will continue, with the prize being a PowaKaddy FX5 trolley which, considering the new rules in most cases of the single use of buggies, would be a very handy prize to win at this time.

This trolley comes complete with a battery charger and a lithium battery with a five years guarantee. The winner also has the option of taking a voucher in the Pro Shop in lieu if he/she chooses.

Some clubhouse information for everyone - all locker rooms will have re-opened from yesterday, as also did our restaurant. Emmet will be present in the restaurant each day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with late opening on both Tuesday and Thursday evenings to cater for your needs. The bar will re-open on July 20.

All players, please remember Covid-19 is still out there, please keep safe, keep your distance, and keep shopping locally with our many sponsors whenever possible.
