Company commissions Aziz to make masks

-

Wexford company Pure Oil Ltd commissoned Rosslare Harbour-based asylum seeker and skilled tailor Aziz Mohiuddin to make 120 protective face coverings for its employees.

In return, the business made a large donation of high quality cooking oil to the Rosslare Asylum Accommodation Centre and a contribution to a sewing machine for Aziz.

Pure Oil’s Human Resource and Quality Manager, Eiléan Hynes, heard about Aziz’s tailoring skills from friends and recent coverage on RTE.

Mr. Mohiuddin moved to Ireland two years ago from Pakistan, via South Africa, seeking asylum, and now lives at the recently opened centre in Rosslare.

Eiléan contacted Wexford Local Development and was put in touch with Emily O’Rourke, Community Development Officer for the Rosslare area.

Aziz made 120 reusable face coverings for employees of Pure Oil who are now required to wear a face covering in situations where it is difficult to practice social distancing.

The company implemented a policy for each driver to wear a mask when entering a premises, engaging with customers or when in crowded areas.

Pure Oil’s donation of cooking oil will come in useful as the Rosslare centre has talented chefs from all over the world, including Syria, Georgia, Bolivia and Nicaragua.

Rosslare Asylum Accommodation Centre has dedicated independent living facilities for up to 100 people in line with the new standards for direct provision being rolled out across the country. These include access to cooking facilities and an onsite food hall.

Pure Oil Ltd is a family run business based in Barntown, which provides high quality edible vegetable oil products to businesses across Ireland as well as used and waste oil collection.

During Covid-19, Pure Oil was deemed as an essential service involving wholesale and distribution services necessary for the sale of food and the company continued to service customers nationwide. ‘We are delighted to partner on this project which supports The Rosslare Asylum Accommodation Centre and gives peace of mind to our employees and customers by having an additional hygiene measure that can help reduce the spread of infection’ said David Simmons, Director of Pure Oil.

‘It is a wonderful piece of collaborative community work between voluntary organisations and local companies’, said Ms. O’ Rourke. ‘It allows the asylum seekers to develop relationships with the community.’ Pure Oil thanked Aziz for his wonderful work and contribution to the community in helping stop the spread of Covid 19.
