Chief Executive dismisses idea Enniscorthy being ‘left behind’
CHIEF Executive of Wexford County Council Tom Enright has blasted any kind of suggestion that Enniscorthy is being ‘ left behind’ in terms of major developments.
Mr Enright was responding to Cllr Aidan Browne, who, during last week’s county council meeting, asked for a status update on council special projects in the Enniscorthy District, adding that ‘it seems like Enniscorthy is being left behind.
We’ve had no building in the Technology Park, no sign of the tourism plan and nothing on the Templeshannon Regeneration’.
Mr Enright took exception to this view being expressed.
‘I was disappointed to hear Deputy James Browne say the same thing in the past week,’ he said. ‘ The council is most certainly not neglecting Enniscorthy. Most projects undertaken in Enniscorthy have been from our own funding. We’ve had the Orchard Park, which is now open; the Courthouse Refurbishment, where a company is set to move in and bring 100 jobs to the town – 100 jobs we fought very hard to get there. Building is imminent at the Technology Park, having been delayed by Covid. We’ve put funding into the Athenaeum. A new site has been identified for the Fire Station and €15m has been put aside for the regeneration of Templeshannon and the town centre. These projects take time. It’s wrong that the message is going out that Enniscorthy is being neglected.’
Cllr Browne was not happy with Mr Enright referencing his cousin in his response.
‘Deputy Browne and I are two separate people with different opinions,’ he shot back ‘And also, I never once used the word “neglected”.’
