NEW ROSS

The long-awaited return to competition saw huge numbers on the course throughout the week, between the open fourball on Monday and Tuesday, the open four-person team competition from Wednesday to Friday, and the open singles stableford on Saturday and Sunday.

The uptake in all competitions was remarkable, with the weekend bringing over 270 entries.

Open fourball: 1, Steve Travis (18) and Tom Murphy (15), 45 points; 2, Tom Breen (16, Castlecomer) and Tommy Rowe (9, Rosslare), 43 points (last nine); 3, Martin Carroll (12) and Ger Freyne (18), 43 points (last three).

This week’s open fourball is sponsored by Seamus Wall and can be played on Monday and Tuesday, as was the case last week.

On Friday there will be a mixed nine-hole competition from 3 p.m. onwards.

Next weekend sees the Military Cup up for grabs in our first qualifying competition of the season. This is a strokeplay competition and is sponsored by Greensbridge Engineering in Mullinavat.

WEXFORD

In our first competition back, which was a two-day event over last Monday and Tuesday, there was some great golf played, with both the winner and runner-up each scoring 45 points in this singles competition.

The winner was our Junior Captain, Kieran Morris (10), who returned a memorable score of one over par off the white tees.

Kieran dropped shots on the third, 15th and 17th holes, but birdies on the sixth and tenth holes gave him a gross score of one over par and his winning score of 45 points.

One has to feel sympathy for a player returning 45 points, only to find himself beaten on the back nine into second place. This was the situation that another of our Junior players, Alex Currid (11), found himself in.

Alex started off with two birdies on the first two holes. He dropped a shot on the third, but another birdie on the fifth saw him turn in two under par. He dropped shots on the eleventh, 13th and 15th holes, but his double bogey on the twelfth hole was to prove very costly for him.

He had another welcome birdie on the 16th hole and finished with two good pars and a score of 45 points which would win many other competitions. Well done to both of these young players.

In third place was Aidan Murphy (10) with another fine score of 41 points. The gross winner was Aron McKeown with 32 points, and the leading vet. was Michael Creane (11) on 38 points. The winner of the ladies’ prize was Bridget Furlong (31) on 34 points.

In the first of our Tuesday evening 14-hole mixed fourball competitions, in first place were Paul Harrington (15) who teamed up with the former All-Ireland Under-23 champion Aisling O’Leary (2) to return a score of 35 points.

In second place were Kieran Purcell (23) and Geraldine Broaders (20), also on 35 points. In third place we had the club President Larry Byrne (10) and Carmel Murphy (9) with 34 points.

Wednesday’s 14-hole fourball was won by Richard Byrnes (14) and Trevor Doocey (19) with 37 points. In second place were Mark O’Leary (16) and Noel Heldsinger (26) with 36 points.

Last Saturday’s and Sunday’s competition was the Seamus Quaid Memorial which is in memory of our former esteemed member, Detective Garda Seamus Quaid R.I.P. This competition was sponsored by the Gardaí at Wexford Garda Station.

The winner with a score of 42 points was Conor Dempsey (23) who won with a better back nine from Richard Byrnes (14), also on 42 points. In third place was Peter Goff (16) on 41 points.

The gross was won by Leo Connolly with 31 points. In fourth place was John Conroy (14) on 40 points, and the youthful Paddy McGuire (18) brought in 38 points to win the vets.’ prize.

The draw for the Howlin Cup, which is sponsored by Brendan Howlin TD, is posted in the locker room. The preliminary round must be played by July 26 and the first round by August 9, so start arranging your matches gents as these cut-off dates will strictly apply given the late start to the competition this year.

An entry sheet for the mixed matchplay has been posted in the locker room.

Finally, the ladies’ and gents’ singles stableford Pro Shop classic will take place on Friday, July 17. This is an open competition sponsored by our club professional, Liam Bowler.

The entry fee for visitors is only €50 per person, and this is a great opportunity for visitors to play our beautiful course in a great competition with mega prizes to be won. There will also be a special nine-hole competition on that evening starting at 6.20 p.m. for those unable to play during the day in the 18-hole competition.

Timesheets are now open for both the 18-hole and nine-hole competitions. There was a great entry for this competition last year, and no doubt there will be a similar response this year.

Keep your social distance and play safely.
