NEW CHURCH RULES

As we prepare to return to a ‘new’ normal, and in keeping with Government regulations, please be mindful of the following at ‘Our Lady’ Star of the Sea Church, Duncannon.

As the dispensation from the Sunday and Holy day obligation has been extended, people with underlying medical conditions are encouraged NOT to attend Church Services for the time being.

Holy Water Fonts are not in use. Observe social distancing and remain two meters from other people (except members of the same household). Wash your hands with soap and water before you leave home. Use the hand sanitiser provided as you enter and leave the church.

Follow the one-way system. Only use every second pew starting from the first pew at the back. Feel free to wear a face mask and gloves. Do not touch any statues. Do not shake hands. Cover your mouth if coughing and use a tissue if sneezing. Do not, under any circumstances, discard any face masks, gloves, tissues etc., in or around the church, cemetery or car parking area.

For reception of Holy Communion stand at a distance from the priest and extend you hand. For the moment, Holy Communion will be distributed at the end of Mass only, and not at the usual time. For the moment, Eucharistic Ministers will not be needed to distribute Holy Communion. Holy Communion WILL NOT be distributed at the back of the church.

Thank you to those who have contributed during this lockdown time.

Please bring your envelopes up to date, as those who send our bills did not cocoon themselves, I noticed, despite me telling the postman that I want to practice social distancing from all those bills.

NB: If you are displaying any cold or flu, or flu-like symptoms, please do not enter the church buildings – contact your local Doctor.

TULLOGHERROSBERCON THE THROW IN

After all the inactivity on GAA fields due to the Corona Virus the green light has been given for games to resume. The fields will once again be a hive of activity as clubs prepare for the opening rounds of the delayed championship.

After their demotion from intermediate ranks last year and now playing in the Kilkenny junior grade they face the Emerald’s from Urlingford in the opening round of the League/Championship. The Junior B team have been drawn against Bennettsbridge. Both games are scheduled to take place week ending July 26.

OPEN AGAIN

All churches in the parish are now open again albeit on a limited capacity. Instead of normal week end worshippers attending in numbers a maximum 50 is all that is now allowed. In the Church of the Assumption Rosbercon, the total that can be accommodated within the regulation is a bare 50 people mainly due to the side spaces being closed.

Loud speakers will be used to transmit Mass to those in the car park unable to gain admission. Mass goers should note that when Mass is ended all leave by the two side doors and keep to social distancing.

HOUSEHOLDERS BEWARE

Of late there are a number of highly suspicious individuals calling to houses in the parish looking for scrap. On a few occasions they have returned the second time. Do not entertain them as their intentions could be based on surveying the property for a possible robbery.

There are two vacancies on the Rosbercon CE Scheme, both at the new Houghton Hospital New Ross. The first post is for an Activities Assistant and the second is for a Caretaker/ Groundsman. Both are under the DEASP Community Employment Scheme and interested parties should contact 086 3642592 for further information.

GAA MEMORIES

We take a look at how the all-conquering Tullogher Football team of the 1930s/40/s won the clubs seventh senior title in 1944.

In the semi-final they faced the Rower in a game played at Barrett’s Park New Ross on August 6, 1944. Tullogher bolstered by including in their team, ex Kerry footballer, Jim Bailey, a garda stationed in Listerlin. In a low scoring first half points by Bailey and Oliver O’Sullivan gave them a halftime lead of 0-2 to with the Rower failing to raise a single flag. Early in the second half goals by Michael Morrissey, Jim Dwyer and Pat Gaule set Tullogher on the high road to victory winning in the end by 3-3 to 0-2

Then in the county final at Thomastown they trounced Coolagh on a 2-7 to 1-2 score line thereby winning their seventh senior title. Men like Pat Gaule, Luke Roche, and Tom Bird figured in all seven victories.

The team of 1944 was, Tom Bird (Hoodsgrove Capt), Luke Roche (Ballycurran), Pat Gaule (Slievecorragh), Jim Malone (Hoodsgrove), Garda Jim Bailey (Listerlin), Jack Walsh (Ballybeg), Jack Cullen (Hoodsgrove), Stephen Walsh (Smithstown), Tom Malone (Hoodsgrove), Bill and Mick Purcell Kilbrahan), Michael Morrissey (Hoodsgrove), Mick and Pat Foley (Inistioge), Paddy Malone (Hoodsgrove), Oliver O’Sullivan (Ballyfoyle), Jim Dwyer (Listerlin) and Lar Murphy (Ballyfoyle).
