ROWERS BREAK NATIONAL RECORDS

- By DAVID LOOBY

NEW ROSS BOAT CLUB junior rowers have smashed the Irish indoor records for 10,000 metres.

All rowers gave their all in early June with the majority smashing the current indoor times, but three came out on top and now hold the Concept2 Irish record for this distance. Jane Sutton broke the J18 lightweight women’s category, Amy Barrett broke the J16 women’s category and Ronan Gibbon broke the J16 men’s category.

The rowers have continued to keep up their training and were given a great opportunity to put their fitness to the test when Carlow Rowing Club held a virtual regatta on May 30. Athletes had to row 1km, run 2km and cycle 5km. In total, 22 clubs around the country and overseas competed in this event with 25 of the athletes taking part on the day from J14 to masters.

The following are the medal winners: Amy Barrett was the overall winner of J16 category winning the rowing and cycling event and coming second in the run event. Ronan Gibbon came second in all three events in

J16 mens category. Ellie Kehoe came third in both rowing and cycling events in J16 women’s category. Emer Hunt came third in both rowing and cycling events in the J18 category.

Amy O’Hanlon came third in the women’s master rowing event.

Janet Walsh of the club said: ‘Well done to all medal winners and also all athletes who took part. This was a great club event as it included those who didn’t have access to rowing machines while the club facilities were closed and created a great club spirit even though all athletes completed the event while apart.;

The club has returned to the water over the last month strictly following government and Rowing Ireland’s recommendations.

Meanwhile, all crew boats are back to full training this week so excitement is building in the club.
