TANKS TO BE TORN DOWN IN EARLY 2021, REPLACED BY RIVER PARK WAY

An attractive parkway along the river Barrow will be developed once the oil tanks on the quays in New Ross are removed in the first half of 2021.

Special Projects executive engineer Sinead Casey told councillors at the municipal district meeting that a public realm space will be created. A concept drawing has been completed, she said, adding that the park way will be a simple and elegant public space on the waterfront, opening up the river to the town. ‘It’s intended that the materials used will be in keeping with other materials used in the town’s parks. This could be a site for future enhancement and the development of the area from the eastern side of the motorway,’ she said.

‘It will be in keeping with the quayfront that is already developed and will be a nice public space that people can enjoy.’

The application for the new park way will run in tandem with the removal of the oil tanks and subsequent clean up works to ensure there is no delay in having the site ready for next summer.

‘We would hope we would be looking at the completion of the site in the first or second quarter of 2021,’ Ms Casey said.

Cathaoirleach Cllr Michael Whelan asked if the oil tank site has been badly contaminated.

Regarding the 0.2ac oil tanks site, she said: ‘We will not be digging down; instead we will be building up the site. There is oil residue which will be raised as opposed to excavated.’

Cllr Michael Sheehan said the oil tanks have been a blight on New Ross for 30 years.

He called for park furniture to be erected and for the park way to be similar in appearance to the rest of the quayside.

A motorist who knocked a cyclist off his bike was given eight months to pay a careless driving fine imposed at the District Court in Wexford on July 9.

Kane Mulholland (46), The Lodge, Mount Elliot, New Ross, admitted the offence which happened on August 25 last year.

The judge heard how cyclist Bill White was travelling on the hard shoulder at Coolnahorna when he was struck by Mulholland’s vehicle.

A conviction and fine of €250 were handed down.
