Games return amid a strange backdrop

- Stories behind the headlines

THERE WILL be games alright this weekend, and lots of them, but not as we know it. And for those fortunate enough to attend, it’s going to take a while to get used to matches being played in accordance with that most horrible of phrases, ‘the new normal’.

With attendances restricted to 200 before July 20 when it will be increased to 500, this first weekend is going to test the patience of administrators and followers alike.

The GAA County Board’s management committee made representations to the Government, seeking a small increase in the numbers allowed in county grounds.

They were due to issue further guidance to clubs on the matter after their meeting last night (Monday), and also promised to provide email updates for season ticket holders, many of whom are likely to miss out on witnessing some live action given these unprecedented circumstances.

And when the games get under way, one interesting addition will be the inclusion of water breaks, one per half.

They will happen at some point between the 15th and 20th minutes, at the discretion of the referee, similar to the situation that now prevails at the cross-channel soccer matches we have been watching in recent weeks.

It’s going to be an interesting weekend, that’s for sure, and unforeseen teething problems are sure to arise in various guises.

Let’s hope that everyone fortunate enough to be at a match - be they players, mentors, officials, or a smaller than usual cohort of supporters - will exercise tolerance and give those who might slip up without thinking the benefit of the doubt.
