WEXFORD

Our competition last weekend was a gents’ singles stableford, sponsored by Fitzgerald’s Menswear, Wexford.

The winner was Graham Goff (9) on 44 points, and in second place was Kieron Morris (6) with 42 points. Third place was filled by Jason White (16). Happy birthday Jason.

The gross winner was Leo Connolly with 35 points, and the vets.’ prize went to John Fenlon (8) on 41 points - great shooting again this week.

Last Friday’s open three-person team competition was a stableford multiplier format over 14 holes, and the winners were Stephen Flood (19), Michael McMahon (25) and Ian Nolan (11) with 86 points.

In second place were Brendan Long (20), Seamus Sills (27) and Brian Judd (19) with 83 points, and in third place we had Seán Nolan (18), George Hillis (18) and Seamus Byrne (29) with 82 points on the back seven.

In the Wednesday open ladies’ and gents’ singles, the winner was Adam Farrell (23) with 42 points. In second place was Kieran Morris (9) on 41 points, and in third place was Andy Lehane (12, St. Helen’s Bay) with 39 points.

There was a welcome return last week for our Senior club competitions which recommenced on Tuesday with a scramble. The winners by a distance were Brendan Long, Seamus Sills, Pascal Kavanagh and Michael Browne with 41.66.

In second place were Ted Mangan, Seamus Byrne, George Hillis and Seán Nolan on 44.66, and in third place we had Ollie Dempsey, Joe Hall and Terry Lyons on 48.0.

There was some great scoring in the twelve-hole mixed better ball fourball on Tuesday evening. Even allowing that the gents were playing off the forward green tees, the three prize-winning scores of 34 points were remarkable.

The winners were Philip Rochford and Deidre Colfer who beat Sam Dempsey and Breda Murphy into second place on the back six, and they in turn beat Joe Cashe and Mary Cashe into third place, again on the back six holes.

On Friday, July 17, we have the Liam Bowler-sponsored open ladies’ and gents’ Pro Shop Classic. There are mega prizes to be won in this competition.

On Saturday and Sunday, July 18 and 19, we have the Wexford Credit Union gents’ singles competition.

Finally, we extend our condolences to Fiona, his daughter Maria, grand-daughter Sarah, Angela, all the family and friends of the late Pat Mulcahy R.I.P.

‘Mul’ as he was known by everyone passed away last week. He was a long-standing member of WGC, a fine golfer playing off single figures with a beautiful voice which was often heard in our clubhouse. Above all, he was one who enjoyed the craic.

ROSSLARE

It was a very busy week on Rosslare links. We started on Tuesday with our ladies’ single stableford competition, sponsored by Paul and Valerie Boggan, Londis Rosslare Strand, and had our first presentation in the club under the new regulations.

Congratulations to Angela O’Neill, who returned a wonderful 40 points. Angela had returned a great score the previous week which saw her lose four shots in a week, giving her a new handicap of 7.3. Well done, Angela.

Results: 1, Angela O’Neill, 40 points; 2, Joan Bowe, 38 points; gross, Susan Evans, 29; 3, Niamh Byrne, 36 points; 4, Catherine Haugh, 32 points; Senior, Kitty Roche, 32 points.

On Wednesday we had a ladies’ and gents’ open singles competition and again some great scoring, with Tim Cummings taking first place with 40 points, beating Finn Ryan on the back nine.

Results: 1, Tim Cummings, 40 points; 2, Finn Ryan, 40 points; gross, Mark Mullen, 69; 3, Rory Byrne, 36 points; vets., John Bourke, 33 points; 4, Boyd Scott, 36 points.

On Friday there was a charity day for Kilscoran, a team of three event. We had a full timesheet, with Joe Moran Jnr., Tommy Rowe and Andrew Moran bringing in a wonderful score of 96 points to win.

Second were Frankie Morrissey, James Morrissey and Liam Walsh with 94 points, and third went to Bill Joyce, Kieran Joyce and Killian Joyce with 92 points. Fourth were Pat Roche, Seán Roche and Chris Cosgrave with 90 points, while fifth went to Rory Deane, Eamon Kelly and Stewart Ryan on 87 points. Sixth were Ben O’Shea, John Leacy and Jack Brazill with 85 points. It was a very successful day for all.

On Saturday we saw the completion of our winter league which obviously had to be postponed in March. The format was a scramble team of three, and running alongside this was an open scramble. Once again we had a full timesheet with great results.

Pádraig Power, Ciarán Power and Dorcas Maher took first prize with 49 points on the back nine, with Paul Holland, Hugh Lynn and Sharon Lynn in second place, and Philip Balfe, Gary Collins and Stephen Hunt third with 47 points.

Our winter league started in early February, and we tried to change it up a bit, running it over seven weeks, with different formats of fourball, singles, and ending up with a scramble on the final day.

It was a very close fight to the end, and what a wonderful day it was. You couldn’t have asked for better weather and the course was in wonderful condition.

In the end there was only four points between first and second, third and fourth. There were individual prizes for each week’s events, but the winning team overall was Captain Keith Deacon, Ger Doyle, John Bolger, Carol O’Brien, Maurice Byrne and Veronica Kiely.

Well done to all who competed, and to Liam McNamara and his team who put an amazing amount of work and effort into organising this event.

It was sponsored by Wright’s Insurance Brokers, and we are very grateful to them for this.

Ladies’ and gents’ open weeks are now available for booking, with some wonderful events - singles, fourball, team of three, mixed teams and mixed fourballs - all available.

Ladies’ open week starts on Monday, July 27, moving into men’s open week on Saturday, August 1.
