The adjournmen­t of a dangerous driving case because the main witness was on the All-Star hurling trip to Argentina brought strong criticism from Judge William Hamill at Wexford District Court on Tuesday last.

Before the court was [NAME AND ADDRESS WITHELD], on a charge of dangerous driving at Ballyknock­an, Kilrane, on November 24, 2000.

Inspector Pat McDonald told the court that he would be seeking an adjournmen­t as his main witness was in Argentina on the All-Star trip.

Solicitor for the defendant said she was agreeing to the request.

However, Judge Hamill asked when were the All-Stars teams announced, and why the case was included for hearing, knowing the main State witness was out of the country.

‘All of the cases in today’s list are for hearing,’ he said. ‘ This case should not have been included in a lengthy list. The All-Stars must have been known, and when where they known?’ he asked.

Inspector Delaney said they were not announced until December, with the defending solicitor adding that she had been informed of the pending applicatio­n just the previous week.

The main State witness on the All-Star trip was famous Kilkenny hurler DJ Carey, who will be available to give evidence in the case adjourned for hearing on March 1 next. partnershi­p with lay people through Boards of Management.

‘It is an ongoing thing,’ she said, adding however that the person who will eventually be chosen for the job must uphold the Loreto tradition. ‘ They must keep the Loreto atmosphere at the school,’ she said.

Sr Genevieve was also eager to assure the public that the Loreto Sisters are not moving out of town. ‘We are not leaving Wexford, and there will be a sufficient number of Sisters remaining in the school,’ she said.

The new principal will take up his/her position on the 1st of August – one month before the beginning of the new school year.
