Wexford specialist welcomes announcement of funding for people affected by eating disorders
A County Wexford specialist in eating disorders has welcomed the announcement of funding for supports of people affected by the illness.
Michelle O’Gorman has seen a rise in people presenting with eating disorders over the past ten months.
‘It was fantastic news to hear that funding has been allocated to improve Ireland’s eating disorder services for 2021. The detrimental effects of Covid-19 on those with mental health issues have been well noted and recent events have shown the true disturbing lack of services and support for people of all ages and genders who are struggling with eating disorders,’ Ms O’Gorman said.
‘Although the announcement of funding brings hope to many people it has been promised in the past. It is vitally important that it is followed through now or it will have tragic and devastating consequences for families.’
FOLLOWING a number of delays, a planning application is set to be lodged for a multi-million euro nursing home in Rosslare Harbour this week. County Council Chairman Cllr Ger Carthy confirmed that an application is to be lodged by Domal Construction for a 90 bed nursing home, along with 24 assisted living units and an additional staff building to the rear, all on the site of the old Great Southern Hotel.
The developer behind the project, Murt Doran, said before Christmas that Covid-19 had caused significant delays to the project, resulting in limited progress nearly a year after it was announced. However, he remained committed to the project and had said that an application would be made early in 2021.
Cllr Carthy confirmed that following a number of pre-planning meetings with the council, the application was to be lodged this week and it had the potential to provide a great boost for Rosslare Harbour.
‘I’m delighted to have worked with Domal and Murt Doran to get this over the line,’ he said. ‘ This is a much needed investment in a new building and will create great new job opportunities for the area.’
‘I think it’s fair to say that the Great Southern site has a chequered past. There have been ongoing problems there over a number of years and it had become a real eyesore. Hopefully this is the opportunity to deal with it once and for all now and we’ll see a substantial amount of jobs created in Rosslare.’
Domal Construction also own the old Tuskar House site and a further development is planned there which is likely to be a mixture of residential properties for sale and further housing units for older people.
