Squeeze in a read for national event

- By SIMON BOURKE

WEXFORD Library is hosting a series of events to commemorate ‘Ireland Reads Day’ which takes place on Thursday, February 25.

This Thursday at 1 p.m. librarian and writer Imelda Carroll interviews Wexford author Carmel Harrington. At 4 p.m. your local librarians will read excerpts from some of their favourite books.

Then, on Friday, February 26 at 1 p.m., Imelda discusses all things reading with fellow librarians Shane and Thomas. All of these events can be watched on the Wexford Library Facebook pages or via its YouTube channel. For ‘Ireland Reads Day’, Wexford Library is inviting readers to find some time to spend in the company of a book at some stage that day.

Those interested in participating can go to www.irelandreads.ie and make a pledge to read on February 25.

Whether you’re an avid reader, a reluctant reader, or a new reader, this campaign is for you. You can read a book, a newspaper or a comic. Just visit the website, enter your favourite type of book and how long you would like to read each day and the website will offer you a suitable book suggestion and work out how long it will take to complete - like a couch to 5k for books.

There are more than 800 recommendations from librarians all around the country, including some from local librarians in County Wexford.

To keep up to date, keep in touch with Wexford Libraries social media on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube and join the conversation by using #IrelandReads or #SqueezeInARead or #WexfordTogether, to share your pledge to read on social media or tell others about your favourite books, recommended reads or the book that got you through Covid. Irish libraries have teamed up with publishers, booksellers, authors and others for the campaign which is part of the government Keep Well initiative and aims to celebrate reading and all the benefits it can have for wellbeing and enjoyment.
