Shamie lived a full life despite many challenges

- OBITUARY

The sad death has occurred of James (Shamie) Power, of Ashgrove, Fethard-on-Sea and formerly of Winningtown, Saltmills.

James was born in 1942 to parents Robert and Bridget.

He had a disability from birth being unable to hear or speak but that didn’t prevent him from doing the things he loved to do.

James was educated in St Patrick’s school for the deaf in Cabra, Dublin. There he learned sign language and he also became very good at swimming and boxing.

When he came home having finished his education, he went to work for local farmers in the area, getting on very well with everyone he worked with.

A kind, decent, hard working man, James loved going down to the local pub for a few pints at weekends. There he would play games of rings, darts and pool with the locals. He won many prizes, including the odd turkey and chicken. James also loved his game of cards, which he played with family on Sunday afternoons.

There would be plenty of laughs in the Power household and the odd shout too.

James enjoyed attending St Louis Day Care Centre in Ramsgrange, travelling there by bus. He made many friends over the years at the day care centre; including his good friend Peter who would always ensure James had his daily paper and anything else he needed.

James spent the last few years in the New Houghton Hospital in New Ross where he received excellent care from the nursing staff; something his family are very grateful for.

James loved being spoiled by everyone. He also enjoyed going to local GAA matches with family and friends.

Sadly James became unwell on December 19 and was brought to University Hospital Waterford where he passed away on January 1, 2021.

The Power family would like to thank the hospital’s staff for looking after him so well by making him feel safe and comfortable over his final few days and are deeply appreciative of the care he got at the New Houghton Hospital.

James is sadly missed by his brothers Tom and John; sisters, Bridie, Ann and Theresa and by his nieces and nephews.

James is predeceased by his brother Bob and sisters Mary, Susan and Nellie.

May he rest in peace.
