ReadingEgg licenceskids

New Ross Library has a limited number of free Reading Eggs licences to offer to parents.

This digital literacy programme is suitable for children aged two to 13 years old. Reading Eggs makes learning to read interesting and engaging for kids, with great online reading games and activities.

It provides an educationally sound and highly enjoyable learn-to-read programme that is not only fun and effective, but also easy to integrate into the daily routine of families.

The Stepping Stones reading lessons are the core of the Reading Eggs learn-to-read programme. Each lesson builds on the previous one to develop skills in the five key areas needed to become a good reader: phonemic awareness and phonics, sight words, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.

The games, songs, golden eggs and other rewards motivate children to keep exploring and learning.

Home is where so much of a child’s early learning takes place and it’s the ideal place to lay the building blocks for longterm reading and academic success.

Would you like to see how Reading Eggs can work for you and your child? Contact New Ross Library’s literacy programme’s administrator Dervla Dunne via email at: dervla. dunne@wexfordcoco.ie

Obituaries

This newspaper offers tribute pieces to bereaved family members within the local community who have recently suffered the loss of a loved one. Unlike an acknowledgment, the obituary tells the story of the person’s life, celebrating their personality and outlining their work and family life in a way that honours their memory. It is a lovely way of recording their memory in print.

The service is available free of charge, and will be completed in a manner that is sensitive to your own personal wishes and requests. Please contact the journalist David Looby, whose details are listed above, if this is something that interests you or is something you would like to do to honour the memory of your loved one who has recently passed away.

Kids’poetry competition

Inland Fisheries Ireland and the Blackrock Education Centre are running the national ‘Something Fishy’ poetry competition aimed at 5th and 6th class primary school students in Wexford and nationwide.

It is an opportunity for students to get creative at home and learn about fish.

This is the second year the competition has been run as a fun way for students to learn more about fish and their environment while also being in with a chance to win some great prizes.

The competition is to write an acrostic poem; in which the first letter of each line spells out a word. Each student is to spell out the word ‘STREAM’ to write their own acrostic poem. Students are also encouraged to illustrate their poems with their own artwork.

Only one entry is permitted per student and it is to be original work. The closing date for entries is Friday, May 28. Parents/guardians are being asked to email the entry to outreach@fisheriesireland.ie and to include the student’s name, class (5th or 6th) and school name and address. The entries will be divided into three categories: 5th class in one category, 6th class in another and there is also a category for entries in Irish.

The winning illustrated poems will be chosen by a panel of judges.

‘The poetry competition is a great way to inspire students to engage in learning in an innovative way. As an education centre, it is great to be part of new ways to involve students in learning particularly during current times,’ Susan Gibney, director of the Blackrock Education Centre said.

Winners will be announced on June 18 and prizes are as follows: three categories – 5th and 6th class and Irish language category: 1st prize- Fishing kit (to the value of €100), 2nd prize – Outdoor field trip kit (to the value of €50), 3rd prize – Goody Bag (to the value of €30)

Each category has three prize-winners winning the above prizes.

There are lots of fun and interactive resources available on www.somethingfishy.ie, to help inspire budding poets.
