LOVE ON THE ROCKS!

COUPLE’S ROMANTIC TRIP TO HOOK LIGHTHOUSE ENDS IN DISASTER

- By DAVID LOOBY

SOMETIMES romance is a rocky road.

In the case of a couple who parked opposite Hook Lighthouse that road led to an injury and a new car rolling onto wave washed rocks and getting destroyed.

New Ross gardaí were alerted to the crash on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. after someone noticed the car on the rocks. ‘ The earth moved and the car moved as well. The handbreak went off and the earth suddenly moved for the couple who might have been in the car,’ a garda spokesperson said. The man presented at St Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny on Sunday and gardaí were notified that he had been in an accident at Hook Head. ‘We are adding two and two together and getting four.’

The car was removed Sunday.

A couple believed to be on a romantic trip to Hook Head came acropper when the car they were in rolled over the edge of the grassy embankment opposite Hook Lighthouse onto an outcrop of rocks on Saturday night.

New Ross gardaí were alerted to the crash on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. after someone noticed the car on the rocks.

Gardaí are set to make enquiries today (Tuesday) into how the unusual accident occurred.

‘A female was attached to the vehicle. She has an address in Kilkenny. A man presented at St Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny the following day. We are adding two and two together and getting four.’

The spokesperson said follow up enquiries were made with gardaí in Kilkenny, prior to St Luke’s notifying gardaí about the accident.

‘ The earth moved and the car moved as well. The handbreak went off and the earth suddenly moved for the couple who might have been in the car,’ a garda spokesperson said.

It is understood the female owner of the vehicle also attended St Luke’s following the accident.

‘We have a PULSE incident in relation to the vehicle. We definitely have one person who has been identified as being involved in it.

‘ There are enquiries going on to ascertain the cause of the accident. They clearly wouldn’t have been familiar with the area. They just misjudged parking the vehicle.’

The 172 black Kia Rio sustained major damage in the accident.

Gardaí have ruled out a suicide attempt, saying the people in the car were more likely victims of circumstance.

As for being outside their 5k, gardaí are unlikely to issue them with a fine as they were not caught at the scene on Saturday night.

‘ They weren’t intercepted so we have no way of issuing a ticket for that offence.’

Mystery surrounds how exactly they managed to get home to Kilkenny, but one thing is for sure, they won’t be in a rush back to one of Ireland’s most romantic locations.
