Local winner of major stake
Son Of Sons keeps prize in county for trainer Devlin
THE WEATHER was near-perfect for a great night’s racing at Enniscorthy greyhound track last week.
The pity was there was no crowd there to enjoy a fascinating Future Champion Unraced Stake final. Local runner Son Of Sons, owned by Wexford’s Joe Devlin, kept the prize at home as he flashed from traps while others made mistakes.
This proved the vital move as Sons’ superior early pace put him in the all-important pole position at the first bend, with Stefans Rocket – trying to make up for a poor start – going into second off the second bend.
Favourite Jaytee Wexford was in all sorts of bother at this stage and his race was run. Down the back, Son Of Sons set sail for home but Stefans showed fine pace to be right on the leader’s tail by the third bend.
Stefans went for the inside run but the door was quickly closed by the leader and the second-placed dog was forced to check.
This was the move that proved the winning of the final as Son Of Sons ran home the snug enough winner by two lengths in 29.24 -0.20 slow, with Stefans in second and Piercestown Fly getting up for third.
The Michael Donohoe Memorial Plate final saw a fine run from the Patrick Whelan and Laura Earleowned Indian Prayer.
From trap rise it was Cactus Sniper who flew out to lead. Indian missed the kick but made rapid headway on the rail to go into third place behind the leader, Cactus, by the opening corner.
However, Indian showed good pace down the back to take the lead by the third bend and stretched on to score nicely by three lengths in a time of 29.34 -0.20 slow.
The commentary on both finals by top broadcaster Ian Fortune made both races that bit more exciting, and well done to all involved in the running of the night’s racing.
