SIMPLE RATINGS FOR CHELTENHAM HANDICAPS

Here’s how to focus on the top quality races

-

Ithought I would share a simple ratings method for top-class handicaps which is based around the 1970’s and 1980’s Raceform legend,CheVan DerWheil. We have these ratings automated and you can view full information at http://formbet.co.uk/sadken

I will update qualifiers over all four days of the Cheltenham 2016 meeting on the Form Bet website so keep tuned.

It’s a points-based system to rate horses in Class 1 & 2 handicaps. It means you are focusing on the real top quality races. You can use Racing Post data for this but the Form Bet version is based on the following:

BETTING MARKET

The Top-5,6 or 7,depending on number of runners in the race, are allocated 1 point each. You can use the Racing Post or Sporting Life forecast but I prefer the Betfair market in the mid-morning.

WIN PROBABILITY

The win Probability is calculated by dividing the Number of Wins by the Number of Runs. So for example if a horse has five wins from ten runs it would have a 50% Win Probability. The highest figure in the race gets 1 point.

ABILITY

The ability figure is the Total Win Prizemoney of the horse divided by Number of Wins the horse has achieved. Again the highest figure in the race gets 1 point.

CONSISTENCY

The consistency figure is the sum of the horse’s last three form figures. Obviously the lower the better and we count any- thing over nine as a ten, same with pulledup, fallers etc. and if the horse has only two runs then we use the last run position and add that. Lowest figure gets 1 point.

TOP-4 OFTHE FORM BET RATINGS

You can use RPR on the Racing Post but ours are more accurate and profitable. Allocate 1 point to each of the Top-4 of our FBR rating.

TOP-4 PACE IMPROVERS

Instead of Topspeed figures, I prefer to award 1 point each to the Top-4 of our own Form Bet PACE Improvers

SUMMARY

This is a very quick ratings method that can deliver regular big-priced winners in top handicaps.
