It’s March, which means only one thing! The best week in the racing calendar, yes, the Cheltenham festival, and we are going to have a look at ways of maximizing profit over the course of the four days of action at Prestbury Park.

FINDING VALUE

As always, with betting on anything, finding value is the absolute key to profiting over the long term and this should be adhered to at all times. There are a couple of ways to approach this with the Festival in mind which are discussed below.

Using past experience to be able to identify where the value lies in a particular contest is not always as easy as it sounds, or an exact science. Two people may look at the same race and come to completely different conclusions as to what represents the value in the race. However, as long as you are taking the perceived value in the long run, then it bodes well for your account balance.

An example of this would be the price that bookies were offering a few weeks ago on Vautour winning the Gold Cup. In places he was 7/1‘non runner no bet’. It is well known that Vautour is a favourite of Ruby Walsh and if it does run in the Gold Cup then he will surely ride it instead of Djakadam. This being confirmed on its own would mean the horse would shorten in price. Added to this is the fact that a few of his likely rivals still had to run another prep race in which only an emphatic win would suffice, and the chances of the 7/1 being around were slim. As it happens, Djakadam fell at Cheltenham at the end of January and the price of Vautour is now 7/2, 4/1 generally. He may not run in the Gold Cup (covered by the NRNB) and even if he does he may not win. However, if you took the 7/1 you definitely obtained good value, and that is the key.

COMBINE VALUE WITH BOOKMAKER OFFERS

Every year that I go to Cheltenham I take advantage of all the Bookie Offers that are available. Combining ‘free bets’ so to speak, with finding Value horses is a sure fire way to greatly increasing your chances of ending the week in profit.

As it is such a showpiece event, online bookmakers will be falling over themselves to give concessions to punters, anything from huge new sign up bonuses, to free bets aplenty and enhanced odds.

If you are savvy and know what you are doing, you can make a very tidy sum during the Festival week and beyond using this method. The great part of it is that due to the invention of the betting exchanges (Betfair, Smarkets etc) using bookmaker offers in such a way can be made completely risk free, and this is something that we discuss in great detail over at betinfo24. It is not unknown for experienced users of this method to comfortably clear a healthy profit on a monthly basis.

Cheltenham will offer many opportunities to use the bookmakers money instead of yours, so take advantage of it, because nothing beats walking away with a profit come Friday afternoon!
