Cheltenham Festival – an early look ahead to 2017

-

Every year as the dust settles on yet another Cheltenham Festival the OLBG members start discussing what they’ve learned from the meeting and also which horses they are keen on seeing at Prestbury Park the following year.

Cheltenham Festival Mares’ Hurdle sponsor,OLBG.com,is a free to join sports betting community of 50,000 expert punters all working together to beat the bookies. The OLBG forum is where members discuss their opinions on every race. What did our members learn from the 2016 Festival that can help for 2017?

THISTLECRACK

When discussing the 2017 Gold Cup the price that OLBG members agree is absurd is the one on offer for Thistlecrack. As low as 6/1 in places, the Colin Tizzardtrained World Hurdle winner has yet to jump a fence in public.

“Thistlecrack is an awful price. He’s got an engine alright, but beating up a poor staying division over hurdles does not make you a Gold Cup horse,” said OLBG member DesWalker.

Fellow member Nellberg1 was more concerned with the opposition he could face. “Even if we take into account the obvious injury risk of an ante-post bet, we’re also talking about what could be a very competitive 2017 Gold Cup with the likes of Don Cossack, Cue Card,Vautour, Djakadam and Douvan all possible contenders.”

MOON RACER

Well respected OLBG member TeddyT, who incidentally tipped the first two home in the Grand National,is very keen on the prospects of the David Pipe-trained Moon Racer when looking ahead to the 2016/17 season.

“I’m keen to see how Moon Racer gets on at Punchestown as he’s a horse I really like.If he looks to have retained his ability he could be hard to beat in novice hurdles next year and the 20/1 currently available for the Supreme might look big in a few months’ time,” he said.

Moon Racer missed the 2016 Festival, but did capture the 2015 Champion Bumper at Cheltenham and had the likes ofYanworth, Supasundae, and Bellshill all well behind.

BALLYANDY

Ballyandy, who won the 2016 Champion Bumper at the Festival for Nigel Twiston Davies, has captured the imagination of quite a few members.

“If I had to have one ante-post bet for 2017 it would be Ballyandy for the Neptune at around 16/1. He looks to have a good blend of speed and stamina so that race should be perfect,” said Nellberg1.

The New One, stable companion to Ballyandy, could finish only sixth in the 2012 Bumper before landing the following season’s Neptune Novices' Hurdle, so the signs are good for Ballyandy.
