Competitive event run on sticky ground MAZZINI (James Fanshawe) was desperately unlucky when denied a clear run at Yarmouth on his previous outing and looked in outstanding condition here. However, he was uncomfortable on ground that rode softer than advertised and came home a one-paced third. Circumstances have conspired against this strapping individual recently – he could have run up a sequence granted quick ground and a slice of luck – but the raw potential is there and he will be hugely interesting if returned to the AW.

7f three-year-old handicap (Class 3) Muddling race

ALBERNATHY (Charlie Appleby) was produced in wonderful shape after a three month break and outran his price (14-1) to finish second. While this might prove a messy race – the field split – he looks right back to his best and will surely be placed to advantage if kept going on the AW this autumn/winter.

KEMPTON OCTOBER 5 7f two-year-old maiden (Class 5) Useful form

RADJASH (Charlie Appleby) is a lengthy, loose-limbed colt out of the unbeaten Fillies’ Mile winner White Moonstone. He was heavily backed through the day and travelled like a winner throughout, only to lose out close home behind the more experienced Intimate Art. Radjash was definitely the best horse in this field – he would have won under a more aggressive ride – and has a bright future.

METEORIC RISER (Richard Hughes) didn’t look wound up for this debut but was noted running on strongly to finish fifth. There was plenty of promise in this effort and, with improvement guaranteed, this colt is worth watching.

ESPRIT DE CORPS (Roger Charlton) has plenty of scope and attracted support at fancy odds. He was never placed to challenge, but kept on pleasingly under a quiet ride to finish sixth. Horses
