Our man looks forward to the Arc and the Juddmonte International

Having done this column a huge favour when running away with the Oaks back in June, ENABLE took her form to another level when running away with the Irish Oaks at the Curragh in July. We are likely to see the filly next in theYorkshire Oaks atYork but it is the Arc at Chantilly in October that I am more interested in, supporting the filly from a betting medium.

One thing that is worth noting is that the John Gosden-trained filly will have to be supplemented for the contest.Whilst forking out 120,000 Euros is unlikely to be a major obstacle for owner Prince Khalid Abdullah it is a slight concern.

Three-year-old fillies have a good recent record in the race with Zarkava (2008), Danedream (2011) and Treve (2013) all successful in the race in the last decade and I am convinced Enable is the best three-year-old in Europe.

To win two classics by an aggregate of more than ten lengths shows the class of the daughter of Nathaniel who has only met with defeat once in five career starts, and it would be fair to say that jockey William Buick was not too hard on the filly on that occasion.

Last year’s Irish and English Champion Stakes winner Almanzor has yet to make his seasonal reappearance and is yet to race beyond an extended ten furlongs but he looks the best of the older horses such was his brilliance at both Leopardstown and Ascot at the back end of last season.A son of Wotton Bassett, his stamina for the additional quarter of a mile is not guaranteed, although the distaff side of his pedigree suggests he could indeed improve for the extra quarter-mile.

Trained by Jean-Claude Rouget,the colt was due to reappear on the Knavesmire in the Juddmonte International this month, but connections have had to postpone his comeback after a minor setback and he is best watched until his well-being is con- firmed.That said he looked a superstar at the end of his three-year-old career but can he give 11lbs to the Oaks winner.

Talking of the Juddmonte International and the second recommendation must be Barney Roy for the York contest after the colt’s second to Ulysses in the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown last month.

The St James’s Palace winner was stepping up to ten furlongs for the first time at the Esher track and with champion miler Ribchester in the same ownership one would imagine that connections will continue to go down the ten furlong route with the Champion Stakes already earmarked as the primary end-of-season objective.

I would be staggered if Richard Hannon didn’t give his colt the green light forYork given he is likely to have just the two more runs this season before embarking on a four-year-old career which is likely to be geared towards a crack at the Arc in October 2018.

The son of Excelebration is 3/1 at BetVictor to take the International Stakes and I expect to see him go off 7/4 or 13/8 on the day. That said Hannon has yet to confirm his Guineas second as a runner – Irish Champion an alternative – but he cannot be opposed if facing the starter.
